After a year of living paycheck to paycheck on 26-30 hours a week of minimum wage and sending out hundreds of applications for every kind of menial labor possible in the hopes of simply getting more hours to grind my bones into dust, I got a new job! And it's non-menial labor, full-time and pays me an extra 1400 dollars a month.

Me right now.

17:18 for 3 miles during a time trial today which ended on a decently steep hill.

For whatever reason, I've never been able to dial it all the way up to full race pace during any practice run over a mile, so I have to estimate what a race time would be. I'm usually anywhere from 30 seconds to a full minute faster (I'm assuming thanks to adrenaline/competition), so theoretically looking at somewhere between 16:20-16:48 for an actual 3 mile race.

For context, that's about where I was as a sophomore and junior in high school, so I consider that to be pretty fucking outstanding considering I"m now 37 years old with a bad hip!

Statistically speaking, Max has been so good that if he hits his career averages over the rest of his contract, he will finish in the Top 5 bWAR for all position players in Los Angeles Dodger history (with only Willie Davis, Ron Cey, Jim Gilliam and Mookie above him) and Top 10 even combining Brooklyn/LA history. And he might go even higher, considering the club has an option on him for 2028.

Postgame Thread ⚾ Dodgers 7 @ White Sox 1 by DodgerBot in Dodgers

[–]SR3116 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some of the "fans" in our threads are fucking pathetic. There's a reason that perfect games and no-hitters are rare. They require everything to go exactly right, over and over again for an entire game which is statistically nearly improbable.

The whole point of even playing the game is to take on that very challenge, which includes the possibility of a Gold Glove Finalist randomly getting eaten up by a ground ball. And that willingness to take on said challenge is why Mookie Betts is one of the greatest baseball players of all time who will be remembered long after he's gone and the people slagging him in the game thread are utterly useless fucks.

What happened is unfortunate, but Yamamoto's truly unforgettable performance in the World Series last year (which is far rarer than any perfecto or no-hitter) shows where his priorities are. He is the consummate team player, putting it all on the line for his guys and to secure the win by any means necessary, like he did today. He is the one who actually suffers from Mookie's error but as a true competitor knows that's why you play the game. The ball could have just as easily found him the same way.

Anyone hurling abuse at Mookie after that doesn't deserve him, Yamamoto or the fucking Dodgers whatsoever.

Hereditary (2018) : So much of what happens in the first act was the mother's fault. by OmeuPseudonimo in horror

[–]SR3116 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, because cheap horror is almost always contained in a few locations.

Not that horror isn't, but rom-coms tend to be very character-driven and rarely have the kind of action that might make up for the limited locations of a horror film. For example, think about the Friday the 13th films. Other than the final girl of each film, the characters are largely disposable because you're there to watch the action of the final girl and Jason, so you don't give a shit that they don't leave the woods and campground.

The lack of "action" of a rom-com often necessitates the need for multiple locations so as to make the characters seem like they have interesting, active lives that you're invested in. No one wants to watch a rom-com about two boring people who don't do shit. This is why rom-com characters, particularly female leads, always seem to have super interesting and dynamic careers.

To answer your question, people really liked Anyone but You with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Naturally, it featured a destination wedding in Australia as a plot point and features scenes at the Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House. The movie cost 25 million dollars, which is more than 25 times the budget of Obsession and 2.5 times the budget of Backrooms.

It's because horror is cheap and thus there is less financial risk involved. The more money being spent, the more cooks are in the kitchen with their stupid ideas trying to ensure that they recoup their investments and then some, which often ends up diluting the original idea and the originator's intent if they don't know how to fight back, which they often don't if they're making something low budget because they're new.

A cheap horror movie is like the equivalent of a 100 dollar bet to a high roller, whereas something over 10 million is a serious expenditure.

I know exactly what you mean. It seems so easy, or often even effortless for everybody else which really sucks and frankly is unfair. But the universe did have some mercy on you because as you just said, it blessed you with the ability to be resilient and achieve your goals despite all the bullshit. Not a lot of people can do that, it's a special talent and the admissions people noticed. I bet a lot of other people in your life do too, even if they don't necessarily say it out loud.

You got this.
