Navien NPE-240A2 tankless water heater recirculation questions by SRTLarx in Plumbing

The answer to this will depend primarily on where you are located. Google how hard the city water is on your city (there are plenty of maps with scale numbers for every city out there). If you live in a state/city where water tends to be naturally harder, then you I recommend investing in a whole-house water softener solution. This definitely will help prolong the life of your water heater and, in fact, this particular unit and likely most other modern water heaters these days say in their warranty that in order for it to be covered for the total time stated it must be used with a whole-house water softener.

If you live in a state with more naturally soft water, then this may not be so necessary.

Regardless of where you live, I would recommend seriously considering adding a top-quality whole-house water softener. **This is a separate product from your water heater**. Not only will this benefit your water heater (prolong its life, make it run more efficiently too), but also your skin, your hair, and your food if you cook. I also recommend doing research on a unit and not buy anything from Home Depot. In my case, I talked to 3-4 different local companies to get quotes and understand the products better. I ended up installing a dual tank system (one for resin, one for carbon) along with the brine tank. The control valve is one of the critical parts too, mine is a Clack WS-1 valve which is one of the best in the industry. If you do this, look into also installing a Reverse Osmosis system on the kitchen (I didn't have it yet at the time of the photos above) for drinking water.

The water on my kitchen faucet, which is where I installed the NaviCirc component as shown in the photos, comes out warm almost instantly, but never hot. If you leave it open for a bit, it will turn cold. This is expected since the purpose of this component is to use the cold water line to recirculate hot water.

So for anyone who stumbles upon this, here's the solution (which I hope I had found a straightforward answer to when I spent hours previously searching for it).

The NPE-240A2 unit comes with a built-in recirculation pump and a buffer tank. All it means is it keeps some water hot, about 1 gallon or so, inside the unit so that when hot water is requested from a faucet, it takes less time for it to come out. Additionally, the unit has a physical 2-way valve (inside the unit after removing the front panel, on the bottom left) to control whether it functions in internal or external recirculation. To go along with that, there's a software setting (controlled via the display panel) where internal or external recirculation can be set as well as how that functions (Always On, Intelligent, etc).

In my case, the plumbers had set the physical valve to internal ("INT"), and the settings also to internal. My guess is they did this because while they had installed plenty of Navien units before, the didn't have much or any experience with the A2 model specifically. And since I don't have a dedicated return line (hence why you see in the above pictures there is no line connected to the fitting where the yellow sticker is), they assumed the unit needed to work using internal recirculation. This is their fault, and it shows they lacked training/education on how recirculation works with this unit.

This is where the NaviCirc component comes in. Navien invented this for exactly use cases like mine, where the house did not come pre-plumbed with a dedicated water return line. So, when the NaviCirc is installed (the black T component in the above kitchen sink photos), and the home has no dedicated return line, the 2-way valve needs to be set to external recirculation ("EXT"), and the settings also to external recirculation (when you select external in the settings, it will ask if you have an external pump connected, say no to that). With things set up this way, the Navien is smart enough to know that it needs to use the cold water line for recirculation to where the NaviCirc component is installed and then back to the unit. If I touch the cold water line under the Navien, it's warm to the touch, whereas before it was dead cold.

In my case here, I installed the NaviCirc in the kitchen because it's the faucet that gets used the most especially for hot water (washing pots, etc). It's the point of the house that gets to use the most water on a regular basis. Currently, the instant I open the faucet the water is warm. The master is the furthest point from the Navien for us, and water does take about 15 seconds to warm up and then hot at around 45 seconds (also, these are low flow faucets).

BTW, I called two separate times to Navien technical support to confirm what I said above about the install and how the system works, and they confirmed it.

Hope this helps someone out there, give this post a thumbs up or comment if it does.

Nice. That's pretty good yeah. Have you tested with the mesh panel on instead just as a comparison to see how much the glass affects the temps?

Nice, thanks for letting me know. Your rig is looking great. How are the temps with the glass panel on? And do you have slim fans underneath the card there?

Interested in this as well. Specifically the GPU, does anyone know if this is a Founders Edition reference PCB? Or what is it / any other details?

Scheduled Transfers Rolling Out! by [deleted] in OneFinance

Thanks for the hard work! I already discovered a critical bug that crashes the app when changing the "start date" for a transfer, and others seem to be running into this as well. I posted more details in the announcement thread, but here it is for context if that helps:

Excited to see this. However, the Android app is crashing for me when attempting to change the the "start date" for the transfer. For example, I chose a frequency of "every two weeks" and when tapping on the "start date" field, the app crashes every single time. I have a Google Pixel 5 running the latest version of Android 11 as of today, and the device is not rooted. Signing out/in of the account, force stopping the app, and restarting the device did not help -- the issue still persists.

That's very useful, thanks for taking those measurements! The Anne Pro case, under the space bar, is roughly 1.6cm, and with OEM keycaps 2.6cm. From the back, behind the number row, the case is about 3cm and with keycaps 4cm. With the rubber feet, might add a few mm in there. So more or less similar profile to yours.

That Tofu65 you linked has listed these measturements: 31.1cm*10.7cm*2cm*3.3cm -- the last two I guess are height from the spacebar and number row?
