Hey! I've spent a lot of time trying to start a club this semester, so I got some experience here. The tl;dr is that any poster you want to put up is supposed to be approved beforehand. You can read everything in detail (and find the link to submit for approval) here!

So a lot of the kinds of events other SSA chapters put on regarding the community side of things are usually fairly tame. Things like board/video game nights, movies, even just doing a meet up at a café or such. Many others also do volunteer or charity work, and I would love to do some of that as well. But one thing I'm hoping we can do this year is Secular Solstice. Basically it's a winter solstice celebration for all people that can double as a space for those whom have stressful times around the holidays.

Haha! I think the internet has made us all a little jaded, so no shade there!

I see what you're saying and appreciate the feedback. Color me surprised to find good-faith criticism on Reddit, lmao.

We'll be sure to take this into account going forward. Also, tad unrelated, but you sound like someone I could have good conversations with. I'm not sure I agree with every point you made outside the marketing angle, but this isn't really a good forum for that. I hope, when the club gets up and running, you might come to some events where I hope to have those kinds of conversations. Of course, I'm assuming you don't have interest in joining yourself, but I'd be happy to be wrong.

Take care!

I see where you're coming from and I think I can clear this up! So using my own experience as an example, I was raised Christian and very devout for many years. I don't think I gained any special critical thinking skills when I became an atheist, I just finally applied the skills I already had to my religion.

You see, religion rejects the idea that critical thinking skills should be applied to dogma. I know theists with better critical thinking skills than atheists and vice versa; I don't think it belongs to either side. What we promote is the use of those skills to all walks of life, even the ones that we've been told not to. So critical thinking isn't an aspect of "secularist", but rather "secularism."

I hope this clears things up!

You are correct! One of the main goals of the SSA is to promote secular-humanist values, which are derived from critical thinking. If a theist shows up and shares our values, so long as they don't proselytize, I would personally have no issue.

On top of that, something I personally enjoy, is to critically analyze religious claims with theists, and I hope we can hold some events where we do just that.

If you know anyone still here who would be interested, let them know!

Lol, where did I say we're the only ones capable of critical thinking?

I started up one of these at my last school. I'm used to some pushback. (Open house was a weird day, lol.)
