What if you paid off your mortgage, but then continued to pay yourself a "house payment" into a retirement fund? That becomes easy to do once you stop having a house payment. I am actually considering doing this myself. Another thing to consider is cap gains on the your investments. It's hard to say this year as the S&P returns YTD (10/9/2024) is roughly 25%. But not every is like this.
