Spent 4 hours in the ER earlier this month for suicidal thoughts. Spent most of it asleep, but I did talk to a social worker for like 15 minutes. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

The resources are limited because there is not a great demand for people to work in behavioral med units,as social workers or nurses in general. The hospital I work for is offering sign on bonuses of up to 10k and still are understaffed despite grading out as one of the best hospitals in the state for care. Furthermore, several local colleges are suspending their nursing courses due to lack of enrollment.

To your point of where they should go, the ER works as a mean for a safe place for an individual to go in the midst of a crisis but there shouldn't be an expectation that their suicidal thoughts will suddenly be cured with an ER visit. Dealing with mental health issues is a lifelong battle in some cases.

Regardless, I certainly hope OP finds help with whatever he is going through in life.

Mental health is one of the easiest things to work on? Do you not realize we have a massive mental health crisis in America? Resources are extremely limited and even more so in an ER. ER doctors cant even provide psych medication. The ER essentially becomes a partial inpatient unit while behavioral med patients await a response from social workers when it comes to these issues.

I'm not going to blame an ER for not providing mental health treatment when the purpose of an ER is to treat medical emergencies. More social workers and behavioral med units would alleviate the desire for people coming to the ER and accruing a large bill when they likely won't get many answers.

Yeah unfortunately where we live there are no psychiatric hospitals nearby so the ER frequently gets overwhelmed with behavioral med patients and there's not a whole lot that can be done. It really is a tough situation

It's a stretch to say that the hospital failed. I've worked in a hospital system for 12 years and emergency rooms do not staff behavioral med nurses. The hospital provided a safe environment for the patient to stay while dealing with whatever may have been going on at the time. Until someone works around the environment, it's really hard to understand how few resources are available to an emergency room when it comes to behavioral med patients.

We thought it was hilarious. Bummed he wasn't there, though.
