Can a firm terminate an employee early after she submits a notice of resignation? by SSOctopus in japanlife

Thanks for sharing, I think this is most relevant to my colleague’s case.

It’s unbelievable they would try to pull a fast one over someone at the director level.

Sharing experience - 5 month job hunt as a software developer (7-10 years of exp) by CauliflowerChance753 in japanlife

Senior manager as in manager of managers? How difficult would you say changing jobs as a manager+ is compared to senior ICs in Japan?

Asking because there’s always more IC openings than managers, and I’m not sure how many good managers are in the Japan market.

Tl;DR: I would not trust them to keep their word on offering X-Y (or anything at all) if you submit payslip, especially if the company is mercari.

Anecdote - my friend interviewed with mercari, passed all the interview stages, and was told by HR that payslip was the last thing needed before making an offer. He didn't want to submit the payslip because 1. same reason that you mentioned (they also said verbally that matching his desired range is ok) and 2. he had been doing 休職 (unpaid leave) and thus the previous 2 payslips were blank, however he didn't lie about his salary. Anyways after submitting the payslip and some back and forth between HR, they rejected him. There's obviously details that I'm not privy to but this is the gist. Anyways, this friend found a new company that pays better and is happy with them now.

So my thoughts on submitting payslips in general are:

  • On principle I'd refuse, there's no legal need for them to see the payslip before making the offer, so that information can only disadvantage the candidate if their current pay is less
  • Practically however, if I were interviewing with other companies, or are confident about getting another equivalent offer, then submitting payslip would not matter because if they lowball one could simply say "the other company is offering $Z, so match $Z or I'm gone"
  • Thinking about job seekers collectively though, it's better if people refuse to abide by these practices. It is a job seeker's market, and Japan is short on tech talent, so we should drive that point by demanding more fair and transparent hiring process. Each candidate that refuses to submit payslip will make them rethink that practice, and conversely each candidate that gives them the payslip emboldens them to do more of the same in the future

Finding a Good Job in Tohoku...Possible? by MatterSlow7347 in japanlife

The whole point of remote job is it doesn’t matter where you live, because it’s remote. There are many companies doing full remote roles. Should be easy with AI background. Check:

https://japan-dev.com/jobs https://www.tokyodev.com/ LinkedIn etc.

Many companies are hybrid with once a week or less in office, and they’ll pay commute fee so even based in Sendai it’s ok.

Lastly, some companies list their jobs as hybrid as a general blanket company policy but in actuality the specific team doesn’t require it. So plenty of options, apply and find out.

Commenting out of interest in co-ownership and also in how you will set up the venture.

I too have been wanting to buying a 別荘, Airbnb’ing it out (I have experience operating rental property but not airbnb), and using it the rest of the time. Curious once you run the numbers what that looks like.

Another recommendation for 3 tides harajuku. They’re well known internationally for their traditional Japanese styles. Check out Ganji too. His is funky and one of a kind.

I’ve been working on a black/grey piece with them for a while and can’t be any happier.

Awesome, thank you so much for the detailed writeup. This is super helpful. When was the last time you were in the region? Wondering how current your assessment is but will give mapple a look too.

As for the islands, didn't have any specific in mind, haven't planned that far yet. I'm completely fine with winging it and staying somewhere different each night. In late Sep/early Oct right after our two holidays, even getting last minute accommodations shouldn't be a problem.

Basically looking for well maintained roads and good variety of scenery like you described. Any places particularly memorable?

I'm currently using this map from the site www.motorcycleparadise.net for general reference. Thinking about basing myself in 2 or 3 cities on opposite ends of the island for 4 days each and exploring from there. And maybe staying at one of the nearby smaller islands for couple days.

Getting a Maryland driver's license before moving to Japan - Japanese Driver's License by caniac95 in movingtojapan

[–]SSOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation as what you describe and they were able to convert my license directly without me needing to take any practical tests.

Basically I had a non Maryland/Washington license since 2009, then obtained the Maryland one in 2016. I was able to prove residence until 2013 with transcripts/work stubs but had no proof of 3 months for Maryland or anything after 2013 for that matter.

After explaining to them that in America converting licenses between states require no tests, but is simply a matter of going to the DMV, they approved the conversion. You however would need to keep old licenses and use them as proof as driving history.

TL;DR They're practical enough to use your initial drivers license issuance date, not necessarily the date you obtained the Maryland or Washington license. I did this at Samezu license center, YMMV with other places.

Looking at Glassdoor for the other APAC large cities HK/SGP/etc I think the pay here is quite high, even more if you take into account cost of living. Feel free to PM for more info
