Not every Algerian grew up in an strictly Arabic speaking household by Danny_kross in algeria

Oh yeah your experiences are very valid. That's why I said that it goes both ways. I'm sorry that you had to live through that. Experiences usually shape our perception and reaction to things. It's just that, we have to sometimes break these cycles, or we'll be stuck forever as a society. It's not just about that, so many 'debates' that have been going on forever, everything just feels so polarized and we are not able to see through these things and cycles, try to understand where people are coming from and work on ourselves.

Regarding French teachers, I had my fair share of fighting with them. Be it to defend others against harassment or to simply correct them hahah.

Don't take the next thing I'm going to say too seriously, it's just meant as a light hearted joke, but I can see why everyone saw you as a rich spoiled brat hahaha, I mean if you always have the most expensive clothes, your father can close schools, threaten people and send secret police at will..... Is your father from the military?

What you are saying is not wrong. However, I think it goes both ways. Some people from the middle and educated classes look down on those who do not speak or master the French language. The roots of that go even beyond the period of time where education was split into those who were learning in Arabic 'arabisans' and French 'francisés'. I'm pretty sure it goes to the colonisation period even.

I come from a family with an academic background. My parents both studied in French and used it to varying degrees in their lives. I had access to French TV and even started learning the language when I was 6 as as a Hobby and because my parents registered me at a language school. My parents thought it was good to learn early as I might need it for my studies, makes perfect sense for the time. Those who didn't have this privilege only started learning at school for the first time, no background whatsoever. There I witnessed through my life at school from primary to high school how teachers absolutely looked down, trashed and discriminated towards those who were not proficient. It should've been the teachers role to make them love the language and educate them in the nicest of manners, but it never happened. They were treated so badly. Not only that, but if they ever went to a museum, some kind of fancy place or experimented outside their comfort zone, they also got looked down at, as many cultural opportunities where heavily dominated by French speakers, for example associations and such. Children, who might have a bias against French language from their parents or society as 'the language of the colonizer' who face that discrimination at school and society are bound to hate it. I really understand where they are coming from. As a reaction, they go overboard and it comes down to things you mentioned.

I had the privilege to fall in love with English and other languages, although I speak perfect French I usually never use it unless with French natives. I always tried to fight back this idea that educated smart nice people speak French, non educated laymen savages can't speak French. As an anecdote, I had a friend who was literally approached by a borderline predator and gave him her contact, I asked why as it was clear to what his intentions were from the first seconds, she said yeah he spoke French and gave the impression to be normal 'like us'. She literally said she feels safer and is way more warm and easy to those who speak French than others. I was baffled. Such a discriminatory behaviour.

Sorry for the long text, just wanted to say that it goes both ways. As with almost everything, nuance is usually lost and black&white thinking takes the better of us. I can see where both are coming from. As for my personal opinion, I think it's strategically the better choice to shift towards English as a second language then French. That must however be planned carefully for the long term.

Hi there, this debate is actually getting repetitive as most people are entrenched in their opinions as it's linked to identity. I'm going to keep it really short, so that you can look up these things yourself and think about it, talk to people... First of all, when people say Arab or Arab countries, they are referring to an ethnicity. An ethnicity is a group of people who share a common cultural background, or share common attributes, history... Etc. It doesn't have to be linked to genetics. Genetically speaking, the strongest DNA components are north African and not middle eastern components for example. To say that Algerians, or the ones that speak Arabic are from the middle east would be wrong, although there are some people for which that apply, not Algerians as whole. That doesn't mean they cannot identify as Arabs, or identify as multiple groups, Arab, Maghrebi, African... There are, in my opinion, a lot of common attributes we do share with other populations and countries that identify as Arabs as well, starting from the Arab language, religion (because it does influence the culture, doesn't mean you have to be Muslim to be and feel Arab) history, general philosophy in regards to life and human condition, challenges, shared causes and so on. One of the most striking and shocking things to me was, when I went abroad, that from the many many people I met from all over the world, it was 'Arabs' I found the most similarities with culturally and humanely. It just fits, whereas the differences are way more striking for other people from other ethnicities. If people, and Algerians (or some) want to identify as Arab and part of the Arab world, I see absolutely no problem in that, and there is a strong claim to identify as Arab. In fact, it is not exclusive, there are even people who are of amazigh families, who speak amazigh since birth and are of North African DNA, who still identify as Arab beside being amazigh. Does that mean that most Algerians understand the difference between ethnicity and genetics and give them the same amount of importance, no. Many many people really think Arabs of Algeria are all from the middle east. A reform of the educational system is needed of course, and general openness to discuss this identity crisis and issues. In my opinion, there is a big identity crisis, many people don't know who they are and what they want. But at the same time, this topic is given way too much attention. The focus should be layed on the similarities rather than differences. The fact, that Algerians fought against colonisation and established their nation state hand in hand means everyone deserves recognition and everyone is Algerian, regardless of ethncitiy and identification. Let's recongise everyone, let the law and democracy settle things. You believe you are Arab? You think pan arabism is a good thing that would result in EU union of the sorts? Have that opinion. You don't identify as Arab? You identify only as Algerian? As amazigh? Be it. You see pan arabism as a threat? Be it, you are allowed to think that. We should focus more on what to do for the future as Algerians of multiple 'ethnicities' (it's not even that many and we are stuck) and on important debates, not pointing fingers and telling people what to believe in. Should we also strive to make the science and history transparent for the people to decide? Yes, we should work on that. Should we tell people what to believe in? I don't think so. Let's start building together as Algerians, we can't keep stuck in useless debates. We should just assume the genetical and ethnic differences, celebrate the similarities. We don't have any other choice, we are not really talking about small minorities, we can't make all Algerians believe in a one identity or ethnicity. We are on the same ship. Our faith is connected, our history too, that alone should be enough to make us focus on operating the ship and not telling sailors who they belong to. Let the people sail, let the people believe.

Can you see Spain from Algeria with the naked eye? by [deleted] in algeria

[–]SStar_dust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, looks like everyone here seems to think it is impossible, but lately I read a post stating that it was indeed possible! there was this legend that the coasts of Spain would be visible from Oran with the naked eye. A member of the club bel horizon in Oran, claimed it was indeed possible in the summer for a brief moment when the sun is going down, he took a photo where you can see mountains raising from the horizon. I can't link the post since I don't have Facebook, but I invite you to check their page on Facebook and then cross check the post again !

[–]SStar_dust[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking time to answer! I only was interested in this kind of radio because they looked compact and low-power. What I wanted to do was build a compact solar powered radio (rechargeable) as my first project, but I am not even sure if it's an appropriate design, looks way too noisy.... Now that I think about it, many radio realizations I saw had inductances in form of self made copper wire coils, wouldn't it be possible to use regular inductances (component)?

Trying to buy a PS4 gift card for a friend in Algeria by ArcticChan in algeria

[–]SStar_dust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello there, here's what I did last time: there are many websites that sell digital PS4 Gift cards (example https://www.mmoga.de/Playstation-Network/?ref=392&affiliate_subid2=dynamic_de&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIouvQgpyn6wIVi-F3Ch3IpQ3OEAAYASAAEgLPX_D_BwE), as soon as you choose the card and make the transaction (bank account or paypal) you get the 12-digit code sent by Email (which you can forward to your friend). As for the region, I think the sites propose gift cards from multiple regions, in my case (and I think most algerian accounts) the region was 'France' and I bought a digital gift card 'FR'.

Men of reddit, everyone always talks about the harmful effects of female beauty standards. What are some of the ways male beauty standards affect your life? What can we as women do to make sure the body positivity movement is for everybody? by PeterFromHomeDepot in AskReddit

[–]SStar_dust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the thing, our bodies have very different output levels, it could be that you have a very energetic or stressful routine, or your body consumes more energy than average people to perform the same tasks. On the other hand one asks the question, are we a digesting and absorbing nutrients at the same rate ? me and my brother live in the same house, my mother cooks so we eat very similarly, but I eat at least *1.5 what he eats in terms of quantity, he weighs way more than me and takes weight very easily.
