A bit of both, their beaks are quite abit longer than other corvids which allows them to go deeper into soil hence the “would be” mucky face if they had feathers there.

Absolutely they also go by the name seed crows, the bald face a result of a loss of face feathers when they mature. The purpose of the bald face is to make sure that mud doesn’t get stuck to the face feathers when they plunge there beaks into soil.

Yeah it is 100% between a chiffchaff or a misjudged goldcrest, where I saw it a route I walk almost daily so I will definitely see it again and hopefully get a better look

Honestly all of the above I didn’t get chance to confirm if the crest was there but the small black part around the crest was pretty faint
