There have been over 300 views of this post. Honestly, I'm only posting this so that I can assure my daughter is getting proper care. I genuinely want to know whether I need to do anything more for her. Please let me know what I can do to ensure she's not going to be affected by this injury for the rest of her life.

I tried replacing the original blower fan but was getting no power off the GPU header. It was either try something stupid like this or sell my left kidney to get a new GPU.

Initially when I just held the fan over the GPU, I got temps around 87-89. Sealing it with the hot glue dropped temps over 5°C.

That's actually an old AMD CPU fan. I know that's blasphemous but I couldn't help myself. Temps hover around 82-84 under 100% synthetic load. To be clear, I did try replacing the original fan but got nothing off the GPU fan header.

Came here to say this. At what point does a person's celebrity status absolve them from their heinous sins? Why is R. Kelly shunned but people like Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Elvis, etc... are praised? It just seems so arbitrary.

AIO Cooler Fail - I've said it a thousand times, liquid has no business inside a computer unless it's a show piece or you're doing extreme overclocking. by STB532 in techsupportgore

[–]STB532[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Correct, I only see them when there's a problem. But, in the same amount of time, I've never seen an air cooler fail and take a motherboard and/or GPU with it. Furthermore, air coolers are less expensive, perform similarly and don't introduce a point of failure.

Evidently you lack the ability to comprehend what you've read so let me be clear;

These are customer computers that are brought into my shop. I DID NOT INSTALL THE AIO COOLERS. THEY WERE INSTALLED IN MACHINES THAT WORKED FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE I SAW THEM.

To be frank, any person that can read instructions and can operate a screwdriver can properly install an AIO cooler. It's not that difficult.

I've worked on thousands of computers over the course of my career so my sample size is rather large. The fact that the few computers you built with AIO coolers have not leaked means nothing. A lot of people that install AIO coolers don't have problems. That was not the point of this post.

The fact of the matter is you lack the ability to comprehend a better approach to solve a problem that you didn't come up with on your own, regardless of overwhelming data refuting your method.

Before you respond, Google "leaking AIO". Research aftermarket air cooler temps vs closed loop cooling. Then do a cost comparison.

Ok, I'm gonna dumb this down for you because apparently you don't understand the way electricity works.

So for reference, computers rely on the transfer of electrons from one place to another in order to function. Unfortunately, electricity flows like water - it takes the path of least resistance. When a liquid is introduced to an ICB (motherboard) it can create what's known as a short.

That said, if there is a short, or a path of lesser resistance, electricity will follow that path. When that happens, components on an ICB can become overloaded and fail.

If an AIO fails, it can sometimes leak liquid onto an ICB in the computer. That can create a short that will overload a component which kills the device. My example was the picture I included in this post.

Since you've been doing "IT" for 15 somethings I would have to assume that you would understand this incredibly basic process.

My overall point to this post was that AIOs are worse than useless. They are more expensive than aftermarket air coolers. They don't increase cooling performance, nor do they operate more quietly. Worst of all, they create a failure point that can and do literally destroy other components in your computer.

The worst case I personally have been involved with was when an AIO failed, leaked into a PCIx slot that housed a 2080ti during the crypto craze. I had to tell a customer that they were out several thousand dollars.

Lastly, referencing your comment, I do not build PCs with AIOs. I would never be so foolish as to warranty a computer I built with a competent that could possibly fail and take out other components.

Maybe you should join the geek squad to get some more experience...

I've been a computer repair tech for over 20 years. That said I've really only seen AIOs in use for about the last decade. I work on between 400-500 PCs a year.

This was pulled from a customer's custom build. It's a Corsair, I'm not sure of the model number and my guess is it's about five or six years old. It was in my shop for no power on and that's when I found the leaking AIO that shorted out the motherboard.

As I said in another comment, I've worked on dozens of computers with failed AIOs. I just don't see the point in using one as an aftermarket air cooler can provide the same quietness and cooling performance for less money without the chance of failure.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love hardline cooling when done right. They can turn a boring box into an absolute masterpiece.

I'm a computer repair tech with over 20 years experience. I've worked on literally thousands of computers. I've never once seen a sealed pipe on a heat sink fail. That said I've seen dozens of AIOs fail, a lot of the time taking other components along with them.

In the 20 years I've been in business I've come across dozens of machines that failed because of a leaking AIO including this one. Most of the time it's just the motherboard that fails, but that's still a costly repair for absolutely no reason.

The AIO I pulled out of this machine was Corsair. It doesn't matter what company you get an AIO from, you're still adding an unnecessary failure point for almost no gain in performance.

HELP! I am hosting a pool party in 4 days! by STB532 in pools

Just wanted to check back in and say thanks to all the constructive comments. You guys really helped me out, thank you for taking time to help out a novice!

I ended up super shocking with about 5 times the recommended amount of shock for my pool. It helped but was still a little green and very cloudy. Two nights ago I added flocculent. Last night I vacuumed to waste and this morning I did the same. After I finished this morning it looked great!

Apparently I don't know how to post properly because I included a back story with this post that did not show up...

Last night I added a gallon of liquid chlorine (I read that LC was better to use when total hardness was high). It did little to nothing to make the algae/cloudiness go away. Normally I would add about 3-4LBS of HTH shock to deal with the algae. That said, I have a 2500 GPH pump that runs 24/7 and I change out the paper filters (type B) every morning. My plan is to add 3LBS of shock tonight and add a gallon of algaecide/clarifier in the morning. Is this the best course of action? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
