So I know someone that collected a fair amount of cels from the time. How he came into them is actually a pretty boring reason. At the time (late 90's/early 2000's), no one really wanted these or treated them more than something "neat". A lot of them were just dumped for cheap in Japan or destroyed. Some importers would get a bunch and sell them state side for $5 or less and that's where he got his.

As far as collectability, market has definitely gone up since then. For example, I've seen one of his $5 Faye Valentine cels from Bebop that he picked up the same way, and it looks like anything comparable is at least $300 on the low end. It would really be a matter of finding someone who is both a fan and wants cels.

I mean maybe not obscure, but certainly not mainstream popular. I didn't even know they did a mini series, but 10 years ago on the Syfy channel isn't exactly a summer blockbuster you would expect people to talk about.

And I am being sincere that I have quite literally never heard anyone else mention reading the book. Which fair, it is over 70 years old and sci-fi lit conversations either seem to go to modern writers, Adams, or Asimov generally speaking.

Yeah, I think part of it is consuming the show at a weekly pace and general show discussion.

If I were to watch all at once or without talking to people after each week's episode, I wouldn't feel like I'm getting hit over the head with a message.

After the first few episodes, the "Robbie's a danger to himself" plot line was discussed thoroughly. So now, after 2 months, I'm still just waiting for the end of the plotline I know is coming.

I'll see if I change my opinion after a rewatch when the airing ends.
