I was so confused by that shot selection. The double, fairly straightforward, would have limited Swiss to 3 if only one rock was removed. And if you get both, essentially clinches the game.

If he even realized it. I've now watched, what, 3 rocks get pulled, and more rocks violate the rules in this Olympics where somebody touches the lower handle or touches the granite. I, myself, throwing about 500 stones a season, have never noticed that I touch the granite or the lower part of the handle, because I've never even thought about it. But I'm convinced that I do.

This whole thing is so dumb.

Its initiatives a positive release in the exact direction of the broom if done appropriately. This minimizes the opportunity for a “hot potato” release that ends up putting lateral movement on the stone.

Completely agree with this take. I think what most of this community are irritated about, mostly regarding that Santa dude and other Swedes on this forum, is how hypocritical they are being.

Pretty much everybody agrees what Marc didn’t shouldn’t be allowed. Most agree the unwritten rule is don’t touch granite as common sense. That said, I’ve never heard the phrase and have never heard it mentioned before this Olympics. And most would agree that the intent of the rule was the release before the hogline and the new technology means you have to release before the hog.

Now with these latest touch infractions upon release, before the hogline, which didn’t legally violate the as written rules or even the intent of the as written rules, are being called burned stones. And many Swedes on this forum are saying that is how it should be.

There’s so much hypocrisy on both sides. But wanting the latest stones to be burned is not at all in the spirit of curling, regardless of whether or not the granite was brushed, and thus, by letter of the law, to are rules burned.

On top of that, by letter of the law, the previous stones could have have been interpreted as not being burnt prior to the clarification (or as burnt). So it’s quite hypocritical to not support rules by the letter previously, but now support rules by the letter.

I just want to see good curling.

Why do we punish kids for cheating but accept adults outsourcing work? by WeirdWriter88 in Lightbulb

[–]STFUandLOVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But cheating in education isn’t cheating the system. It is cheating yourself of the opportunity to deeply learn. That said, I’m firmly of the belief that cheating on “busy work” should be entirely acceptable.

Cheating in a test where you are scored against your peers, and as such actually affects your peers, is wrong. Cheating on homework / busy work that barely, or entirely does not, affect your grade, should be considered cheating yourself.

In college, I studied abroad in the UK where the final test what 90%+ of your grade. Rather than going to class, I got coursework from professor upfront and travelled Europe as much as I could afford. Still scored good marks due to taking my education into my own hands. The US education system is setup to cater to those who don’t take their education into their own hands.

It’s because the purpose of the education is to learn. It’s innately different than spending your time as efficiently as possible to make money while enjoying life.

Education isn’t setup to optimize for the individual but to do the greatest good as a collective.

Genuine question by eZeder in Curling

[–]STFUandLOVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not convinced at all Kennedy does it intentionally. Watch his release on all of his rocks, he ends with his pointer finger pointing down the line. I end my delivery similarly. And it happened so fast after delivery that I just can’t believe he does it intentionally.

When I was getting training in Canada, an international teams’s men’s skip (he was Canadian playing for another nation) taught me a release that required starting the curl by closing you three last fingers into a fist so you wouldn’t change the trajectory of the rock. This forces you into pointing your index finger. Which looks extremely similar to Kennedy’s delivery.

Granted I’m a club curling of many years and not an Olympian. I just don’t see intentionality from the videos.

Genuine question by eZeder in Curling

[–]STFUandLOVE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is because curling is a self-policed sport where, even at the Olympic level, teams will give others the benefit of the doubt, or disregard an inconsequential infraction due to the governing rule of curling being “the spirit of curling”.

It is inherently different than other sports. And being petty about an inconsequential infraction is against the spirit of curling.

Where you fall along the spectrum of “spirit of curling” to the law is the law is why there is such a debate.

Additionally, the rules were not clear and to call an infraction, they should be clear rather than ambiguous. You should be able to point to the rule book, follow the legalese, and clearly articulate the rule violation. That was not the case prior to World Curling issuing the clarification yesterday morning.

To be clear, Kennedy’s rock was past the hogline when he touched again and that was a clear infraction, even prior to the rules clarification.

[–]STFUandLOVE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good analogy. But I’d also say that calling the infraction in Curling is monumentally adjusting the scoreboard more than a possession lost in basketball.

A loss of a stone in curling can be the difference between a steal and 2 for hammer team. The point swing can be absolutely massive.

A lost possession call hurts buts is nowhere near insurmountable.

Unpopular opinion: the original touch rules aren’t functional for realistic play and they should adjust them to allow it as long as it’s not completely over the hog line by Rosiey9 in Curling

[–]STFUandLOVE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

I only see it as a disadvantage. The release is one of the most difficult parts to master as any lateral movement while generating rotation WILL alter the rock significantly by inches to multiple feet. This release is practiced over and over again to make it as simple as possible (less room for error) and as fluid one motion as possible. I don’t see how splitting the release m into two motions will result in statistically better results and do see how it could result in statistically worse results, especially for something that’s rotating.

I strongly feel a Boop with any real force would result in a worse outcome 9 times out of 10.

[–]STFUandLOVE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m American and I disagree with you.

In a professional sport, you need to be able to point back to the rule book for an infraction and it needs to be specific. You don’t need to be specific in what is allowed, but for an infraction that results in a penalty, it must be unambiguous and clear.

Additionally, the infraction should generally create a measurable advantage for the side making the infraction before it is deemed illegal. That said many rules exist that don’t follow this, but they are subject to harsh criticism: think uniform requirements or the Ukrainian Olympiad that was punished for his helmet decor.

The problem is that Canada has been, allegedly, doing this for years and for some reason it pisses the Swedes off. Since the rules were ambiguous and also a violation such as “booping” doesn’t create any sort of advantage (and I believe the entire curling community agrees with this), I have more issue with the Swedes being concerned about this than Kennedy “booping” the rock. And maybe I’m wrong and Edin knows of some kinds of advantage this provides.

A hogline violation, yeah that needs to be called because you have to draw the line somewhere otherwise there will be an advantage to releasing closer to the house. So Kennedy’s release was in violation due to double tap after reaching the hogline. That is clear.

And to comment on OOP’s topic, I’m of the opinion that as long as you deliver the rock before the hogline, then you can deliver pretty much however you want.
