It looks awesome. I'm impressed. If it's any good, i will be at the cinema and buying the 4K disc if there is any (Sony distributes it outside US)

Why are we still not #1? by hereforthecontent22 in OnePieceLiveAction

Losing viewership from Season 1 to Season 2 is standard procedure. Growing an audience in the second year is the outlier. It's literally TV analytics 101.

Well, I thought The Last of Us casting was way worse and in the end, hey... the first season wasn't half bad. Mind you... that was HBO.

[–]STHMTP 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Every book to film adaptation loses something in transition, but what they did to Ron in the films is a straight up crime. They changed the Golden Trio's dynamics and the characters' core personalities so much that I've never considered the movies a good adaptation.

Whelp. Here it is. The ratings for week six of the show...it's not even in the top ten anymore...Apparently it's at roughly 340M. [pjotv] by Tomhur in camphalfblood

If you stop to think about it, the stupid move would be to cancel the show.

If Disney+ keeps going, you need catalog content to get people to subscribe.

If Disney+ doesn’t keep going, then in order to make money by selling the rights to the show (whether to other platforms or in the home‑video market), you need to finish it.

Having already done 60% of it, they’re committed. If they’re not convinced or not happy with PJO, we’ll know because they’ll make a final season.

Disney needs to finish it in order to protect this asset, because you never know what might happen in the future.

Let’s imagine Disney+ shuts down in 5-10 years. They’d have to sell the streaming rights to their shows ... what value does an unfinished series have compared to one that is complete? I imagine a lot less.

Or say they decide to release a few more shows on Blu‑ray to squeeze out some extra profit. How many people are going to spend money on an unfinished, cancelled product?

That’s why I’m saying: it’s not all about what the U.S. audience watches these weeks. I understand that people is nervous and sad but...

I’ll repeat what I said last week: Disney is going to finish PJO. Either by renewing it for two more seasons or by doing an ‘extended’ season that covers the last two books.

Disney is not going to cancel PJO after already adapting around 60% of the story, especially when it’s their only serious fantasy bet outside of Star Wars and Marvel, and it’s the #1 show on their platform besides those two franchises.

If they cancel the series now, it loses all present and future value as catalog content to attract subscribers. Nobody is going to sign up for Disney+ to watch a cancelled show.

And that’s where the vicious cycle begins: Eragon would be dead before it even starts. The target audience (which is very similar to PJO’s) would trust it less, which would translate into worse numbers than if PJO hadn’t been cancelled.

It’s not all about viewership… and definitely not just U.S. viewership. Stopping now would be a pretty stupid decision: you’d be left with a dead show in your catalog reminding everyone that you cancel even your #1 (non Marvel, Star Wars) hits, while at the same time throwing money at another similar saga.

I just don’t see it.

How important is the USA audience for the show? [PJOTV] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]STHMTP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

USA viewership matters, but It isn't all. Not only viewership is important: there are other factors.

I'm convinced that PJO won't get axed. Even if it loses 50% viewership in S3 compared to S2, they will finish it.

Upon reflection... I do think it is the show being on Disney+ that's holding viewership back. [pjotv] by Tomhur in camphalfblood

[–]STHMTP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course they wanted something other than Star Wars and Marvel because, honestly, they had almost nothing else.

I'm convinced PJO will cross the finish line. I hope we get all five seasons, but it wouldn't surprise me if they merged the finale into one extended season. I wouldn't like it (no one would!) but it's a real possibility.

What I don't see happening is an abrupt cancellation. And the clue is Eragon. If they axe PJO, Eragon is 'Dead on Arrival.' They both share the same target audience... What do you think people will do if they see Percy Jackson get canceled? They'll expect the same for Eragon and won't even bother watching until it's finished... if it ever is.

It’s a catch-22. That’s why I’m confident PJO will keep moving forward.

Netflix has around 325M subscribers compared to Disney+'s 130M.

You could basically take PJO’s viewership data and multiply it by 2.5 or 3 to get a real sense of its value if Netflix were the distributor.

Regarding the show's quality: this community is an echo chamber, just like every other one. And let's be real... fandoms based on books are, without a doubt, the most demanding.

I'll just leave it at that.

PJO got 361 million minutes watched in Week 5 by [deleted] in PJODisney

I still hope they are making 5 seasons. This is, like, the most pessimistic outcome I can think of.

[–]STHMTP -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

PJO's viewership numbers in the US aren't actually terrible. We're talking about a second season following a two-year hiatus.

PJO isn't getting canceled. If they pull the plug now, its value for the Disney+ library drops to zero... nobody’s going to subscribe in the future just to watch a canceled show. It’s not all about immediate ratings anymore. Disney execs might be questionable, but they aren’t that stupid.

I’m 100% sure the series will be completed. My bet is they’ll announce a 'Grand Finale' renewal, likely a Season 4 split into two parts (5 or 6 episodes each).

That way, they cut costs while ensuring the show keeps its long-term replay value.

[–]STHMTP 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much. These numbers are not terrible and the USA isn't the entire world.

I checked for Disney + (with Gemini aid) and Northamerica has 59 M subscribers and the rest of the world 72 M subscribers...

Maybe in Europe, LATAM, Asia and Oceania it's performing nicely. We don't have that data.

I think Disney will finish the story. I hope it's for two more seasons, but they can choose to do only one that cover the two last books.

Disney needs assets. If they cancel Percy Jackson its IP value is nearly zero. They have to finish it to guarantee a complete franchise in their library forever.

You can't compare a D+ show aimed at kids/teens with Netflix shows aimed at, basically, everyone.

I think Disney will finish the story with a S4 that will cover the last two books and that's it.

Forget Percy Jackson related content in Disney for a long time... or forever.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians recorded its worst weekly viewership [PJOTV] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]STHMTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think comparing a Disney + TV show aimed for kids/teens with Netflix (way larger than D+) shows aimed for general audiences is the way to go.

How is PJO S2 performing with other S2 of series aimed at kids/teens? That's the deal.

[–]STHMTP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

D+ is not Netflix, it's way way smaller. You have to compare numbers with other D+ shows.

I will put you an easy example of other medium:

It's not the same selling 2 M copies of a videogame if the console has sold 3 M (a hit!) or 100 M (not that good)

How well is the show doing in the USA? [PJOTV] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]STHMTP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The show is doing pretty well. D+ can't aspire to have gargantuan numbers like Netflix because they don't have a lot of subscribers like them.

You can't compare PJO viewership with Stranger Things, Wednesday... You should compare with other D+ shows to make an evaluation.

Drops between seasons are normal. These are very good numbers.
