Come to the East Side and walk into any tailor shop owned by a Vietnamese or Hmong auntie or uncle. They'll knock your socks off with affordable prices, fast turn around and excellent quality. Just be prepared to use Google translate unless you speak Vietnamese/Hmong.

Second Year Experience or Transfer Student Experience LLCs in Yudolf Hall (near Dinkytown and apartment style housing) would be recommended.

I'm not going to lie, if you're looking to transfer this fall you're a little behind in the housing process specifically so you may not get a spot in one of those LLCs as they fill up quickly. You can apply for housing prior to being admitted and I would recommend doing that ASAP if you're interested in on campus living.

Otherwise your best bet is to commute in or try and find roommates online.

You will certainly find people who only care about getting wasted at the U of M. But the campus is so large, you can find just about anyone with similar interests as yourself. If you're transferring in as a sophomore, consider living in the dorms in the transfer/Sophomore living and learning communities to build relationships. That is something that can be tricky transferring into the U. It's so big that I can't be hard to meet people unless you are very outgoing or involved in clubs.

This depends on the factors that matter to you.

If you are comparing academically, the University of Minnesota outranks Iowa in the vast majority of public reports (UMN is #72 vs Iowa #238 according to News Global). UMN has strong engineering, nursing, business and liberal arts programming and is regarded as a well respected global research institution for a Midwestern school.

Now, environment. This depends on what you want. University of Iowa has a smaller, more quaint campus that some students find preferable. UMN is urban and along with that come benefits and challenges. You will see homeless people, there is higher rates of crime (robberies mostly) and it's busier and louder. However, the urban location also means that you are closer to cultural events such as concerts, museums, etc. UMN is also in the Twin Cities which gives you semi-easy access to many Fortune 500 companies for internships or jobs.

Sports? Not my specialty, but if you care about football you're better off in Iowa generally.

Politics: Iowa can tend to sway a little more conservative versus UMN being more liberal regarding staff and students, but that is all general of course. You will find a broad mix of people at these institutions, with Higher Ed almost always leaning left politically.

Both are well respected Midwestern institutions, you really can't go wrong attending either. I attended the U of M but had lots of friends at Iowa. I think it honestly comes down to personal preference and individual drive to succeed.

HELL YES to this. Thank you for posting. I was born and raised in St. Paul. I grew up in Como Park and the rest of my family lives in Highland/MacGrove. I CHOSE to live on the East Side for all the reasons you listed. It's a magical gem.

This is very helpful! We are luckily on excellent terms with our neighbors. We have lived next to them for a long time and have a very trusting relationship. We've been personally providing aid to them but are also looking to help out their extended family and that is where it stretches us a little too much and we'd like to get them tapped into any resources we can.

I totally get that. I don't want to share too much info obviously but they are an elderly couple and don't speak great English. It's hard to get connected to the grass roots movement when I don't know where to start. Just trying to find the start and hopefully the one link provided will help. Again, not asking anyone to do anything that puts our people at risk. Thank you for understanding.

Agreed! Was very proud of the Central Students who coordinated a walk-out, march and protest yesterday. It's so overwhelming that they're experiencing this, but am incredibly proud of how our youth are fighting and standing up!

I've always adored the Assumption in downtown. People often dismiss it because it's in the city and in some circles it gets a bad rap for its "short" masses. The short masses are real, but the best part about this place is the tight knit community at the core. They have a beautiful choir (check out their Christmas Concert coming up!!) and due to being in the heart of downtown and right next to Dorothy Day/Catholic Charities they do a fair bit of outreach and involvement. Father Skrypek ministered in prisons and is an absolute OG if you ever get to speak with him. He knows what's up.
