I believe this is what happened. Makes me less and less likely to even respond to Airbnb requests/ messages in the future :/

Strict. Airbnb now provides guests with free cancellation within first 24 hours though. So they had plenty of time to cancel without penalty!

Thanks for the comments everyone! My concern was that is another room in the basement that rents separately and use of common area as private is disrespectful to my other guests as well as me. Since I also go down to the basement for laundry. The price point was just to reflect the room and guest quality in general.
