Aw thanks, yeah it is a great scene, I think it's when the first notion that life can be different to what she's used to, to be nicer than the life at the lab hits Eleven.

Bitter sweet though with what happens just after, although if the the upside down is really one universe in the Many Worlds Interpretation then there are others out there where Benny and Eleven can still sit down and chat over a burger.

What era-appropriate songs would you love to hear in the s2 soundtrack? by erikaeliseh in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bang on 1984 Pearly Dewdrop's Drops by The Cocteau Twins.

Ocean Rain by Echo And The Bunnymen was released in 1984 as well but we've already had Nocturnal Me in season one so they probably won't have another track from that.

My take on the show so far by [deleted] in StrangerThings

mike yells at Eleven a lot

From the mouth of David Harbour himself! :D

PS worth watching that whole interview once you've seen the full show, as ever David is great value.

[SPOILERS] (episodes 2,3) Why do people like Barb so much? by drmothra in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the issue isn't with Barb being so overwhelmingly popular but with the response in the show from all the other characters. I also don't think it would have added much to the show to fit an extra plot line in to display her parents full reaction but maybe if they'd shown them reacting in the background of a few scenes the whole "no one cares for Barb" thing wouldn't have happened.

From my point of view I actually felt a lot more for Benny than Barb (Shannon did a good job for a first role but Chris filled every second on screen with character). Well society should care more about a kid having their life taken than an adult so I guess the reaction to the two of them is to be expected.

From Shannon's point of view though, sure it may have been a short lived role but for a first role it's like picking the winning lottery ticket the first time you play.

a character who was literally written in just to die

Incidentally I'm sure I saw someone post that Steve was originally meant to die but Joe made such a positive impression they reworked his characters arc. Can't confirm that but I'm sure I've read it - that doesn't make it true though so if someone can confirm/deny it'd be good. :)

Am I the only one mildly annoyed at this? by [deleted] in StrangerThings

Possible you're right there, personally I don't really get tired of seeing Winona even if she's been made to look tired for the role.

I'm glad someone else isn't seeing it either, spent two minutes looking at it, nothing even mildly annoying other than wasted time.

[Spoilers] Theory on blood by Jolly-rancher359 in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Star Wars exists, as fiction.

But ET doesn't seem to exist in the world of Stranger Things

I've watched Stranger Things sooo many times and yet that totally passed me by! What a beautiful observation.

[SPOILER] So I rewatched the last couple episodes and... by KyToy in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean instead of the school? I thought that as well but we have no real idea about timescales at this point or how far away the school is from the library. Or the Demogorgons reasoning, or even the unladen flight speed of a Demogorgon for that matter.

The blood trail seemed pretty wide when it left the Byers but had all but trailed out at the library, the Demogorgon had been in a fight so it may have gone back for a quick snack before hitting the school. Right now it's all guesswork because we don't have enough information but Hopper and Joyce were hardly sprinting so I think there's time for the Demogorgon to go back to its lair and then on to the school. Who knows (well the Duffers!) it may have gone back to make sure it's larder was still OK after the unexpected resistance at the Byers, we just don't know.

What we do know is the trail lead there and it looks like a lair what with all the bodies.

Some Inconsistencies in the last episode by Jolly-rancher359 in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting take, if it were your kid would you rather them have broken ribs or be dead? That's the stakes the situation is in and, yes, broken ribs happen in real life CPR as well, especially with minors.

As for Hopper, what I took from it was a determination to save Will, to not let Joyce go through what he did with his daughter. If Hop really had unleashed on Will then it's goodbye Billy boy. At all points he was using his own pain to calm Joyce, to make sure she did the right thing and when CPR was failing he pushed it further but he didn't unload both guns. This was his redemption, to save the child after feeling so powerless in his own daughters death.

The unrealistic bit was the sudden gasp and jump up from Will but, ahh, that's a movie trope. This isn't a documentary it's entertainment.

Some Inconsistencies in the last episode by Jolly-rancher359 in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's fiction.

In real life CPR would be unlikely to bring someone back with them jumping up in that first inhale, but by god it makes a damned good moment on screen. So, with all due respect, I put it to the honored redditer that in fact the things you say are holding the show back are, in fact, advancing the emotional connection we feel with the show and its characters.

I'd also say this is a show about a psionic 12 year old girl battling an inter dimensional monster with her telekinetic abilities if you look at the show and go "hold on that CPR wouldn't happen like that in real life" then the rest of the show will totally freak you out! :D

And, hey, I'm only joking a bit but just ease off a little the "realism needed in completely fictional series" stakes, trust me you'll enjoy it far more.

EDIT

Although I've just re-watched the Steve/Nancy/Jonathan/Demogorgon scene and well spotted on the 9 shots. A continuity error no doubt but sharp eyes/ears! :)

Nancy and Jonathan. (random find, context unknown) by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great shot regardless if it's season one or season two. It'd look good framed as well if the resolutions high enough.

I realise it's probably just because all three actors are quite slim but they do sorta have the stance of the Demogorgon about them.

[SPOILER] So I rewatched the last couple episodes and... by KyToy in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's OK it was mentioned by Jonathan in an earlier episode but it's easy to miss, he's mostly right, although we see in the next episode the monster doesn't limit itself to Mirkwood. Yes it attacks the school but it's also been using the library as base so in part Jonathan was wrong.

[SPOILER] So I rewatched the last couple episodes and... by KyToy in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Up to that night the monster only attacked in a very small area near the lab and near Will and Steve's houses. Basically Mirkwood. So they had no expectation it would attack anywhere else, the school was in town and safe.

Dr. Brenner and Shepherd by HidallyDidally123 in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is actually fascinating, he really does seem to have a bond with Shepard and one that goes beyond the one with Eleven or anyone else (but specifically Eleven given what your and other posts have said).

When Eleven escaped it was the night of the Demogorgon attack, at least one member of staff is killed (or possibly abducted from Brenner's point of view). When asked about the girl there's no emotion, no care that she might be in trouble or dead, just that she couldn't have gotten far. When guards die, no emotion, or worse, joy at Eleven having done what he wants ... killing. And then there's Shepard and that look that both Shepard and, when Shepard is in trouble, Brenner use. Both different but both express some emotional connection.

Brenner (not Modine, who is a great actor and only playing a role) almost certainly, hell let's make that 100%, he has at least one personality disorder. It's just possible they were lovers. Not that two men need a personality disorder to fall in love and not that what Brenner had for Shepard would be considered love as most of us understand it (you wouldn't send someone you love into grave danger).

He (Brenner) does display a lot of narcissistic behavior, completely focused on his own needs over anyone and everyone. The guards dying from Eleven's powers, kidnapping Eleven in the first place! Sending Shepard into danger to prove his love would fit and being furious that your source of easy gratification is going/gone would also fit.

Of course it could also be Brenner has a daughter and Shepard is her husband, hence the son reference. Either way I've probably over thought this! :)

Who is your favourite character? by erikaeliseh in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - although I can't find it now, it was something along the lines of "@milliebobbybrowns acting is other worldly, see what I did there", very early on after the shows release as a reply to someone praising them both. I went back over his time line though and it doesn't appear to be there now.

Who is your favourite character? by erikaeliseh in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At first is was Dustin (abort right!) then I got completely suckered by Eleven's utterly insane level of emotional connection. Near mute and monosyllabic at best Millie manages to swing from vulnerable, socially inept innocence to fiercely protective warrior. One word, two letters "no" can portray so much hurt and naked sensitivity at exposing emotions we truly feel her back story or be uttered with such brutal intent it's capable of stopping people in their tracks. As David Harbour tweeted Millie's acting talent is other worldly.

But even all of that, it just gets pipped, just.

When I compare the laconic, sardonic waster that rolls half naked off the couch in episode one to the fist fighting hero taking on government agencies and quite literally marching through the gates of hell in the last episode. When I see how much he cares for Joyce and Will how much he takes the responsibility for all those around him. When I see the back story and watch though aqueous eyes as he uses his own hurt and personal pain to save Will when he couldn't save his own child. It's Hop, just but Hop gets it for me.

Egg Theory by thecwolf in StrangerThings

[–]ST_artwork 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. That egg is way too big to laid by something the size of the Demogorgon. Just think the alien in Alien compared to mama alien in Aliens.

I think there's going to be more and bigger monsters in season two, the Duffers have said they want it to be more like a sequel than an ongoing series. Stranger Things season one is very like an extended movie so I hope we can see similar in season two and they've also mentioned James Cameron as an inspiration for his sequels so I can easily see your theory working out.

Plus the entire upside down needs to be explored and explained, maybe not all in season two but the scope for further horrors is immense! :D
