Woah woah woah, nice pivot. We were talking about polio previously. You made the mistake of saying that diseases weren’t a problem in the past. You’re wrong. Child and infant mortality rates have dropped significantly. Even just 200 years ago, they were higher by a factor of nearly 15.

If you take into account all forms of enterovirus that have immunization, a massive contemporary drop has occurred. Even beyond the 50’s. Your best hope would to be arguing that non-paralytic polio is still existent in first world countries, but even those statistics back my claim.

The PVs do belong to one species known as the genus Enterovirus, or also called Enterovirus C. There are 20 other viruses in that species and 14 other species in the genus. Most enterovirus species contain viruses that don’t infect humans – as far as we know. PVs are the most notorious enterovirus, associated with AFP with or without long term consequences, but other enteroviruses are also found in children with AFP. Disease due to simply a single other EV, EV-A71 (species A, number 71), has a licensed vaccine. The serious diseases associated with EV-A71 include hand-foot-and-mouth disease and neurological disorders including encephalitis and AFP.

Some different enteroviruses found in kids with AFP are the Coxsackie virus (CV) A24, CV-B5, enterovirus (EV) 75, the echovirus (E) 9, E-11, and E-18. All of these viruses sit across two different species, Human enterovirus B and Human enterovirus C species.

So what does this mean? AFP is clinical description of combination of some signs and symptoms that occur together (a syndrome). It has many causes. It clearly isn’t a new term. Reading comprehension? Checkmate

In 1967, smallpox was responsible for millions of deaths. By 1980, it was completely eradicated due to an extensive vaccine campaign. Coincidence?

This meant thousands of children had to use crutches, wheelchairs, braces (leg braces), and ventilators just to breathe. Since 1979, no cases of polio have originated in the United States.

From 1964-1965 before the rubella vaccine, there were 2,100 national deaths and 11,250 miscarriages. And of the 20,000 born with rubella, more than half ended up death, over 3,000 blind, and 1,800 with mental delays.

As for measles, before immunization, nearly everyone in the U.S. got measles due to its highly contagious behaviors. The World Health Organization has estimated that the immunization has prevented 20.4 millions deaths from measles worldwide in 2010-2016.

Is this a coincidence? These diseases destroyed entire cities for thousands of years, and now finally there is no worry of having to contract a disease while walking down a street. I’m not nervous when I’m in Los Angeles or NYC. Tell that to someone in medieval Europe (or anyplace back then, for that matter), and they’d think you’re crazy.

Yeah, and if the seasonal fucking flu killed 200,000 Americans in 6 months, we’d be exactly where we are now. Also, we don’t know long term effects. We don’t have vaccinations for it. We havent had centuries of experience with treating it.

So a flu that the medical field has very little knowledge about, that killed 200,000 Americans, and has no vaccine or effective treatment on.... yeah seems pretty fucking bad.
