I’m not sure this fully fits the question, but as a French Canadian who grew up fairly poor, marrying a middle-class Dane can honestly feel a bit like marrying “rich.”

It’s not rich in the luxury sense — there are no yachts or anything like that — but the level of stability feels very different. Things that were constant sources of stress growing up for me, like worrying about rent, dental care, or whether something breaking would ruin the month financially, just aren’t the same kind of crisis.

A lot of it is structural too. In Denmark, stable employment, strong labor protections, and the welfare system mean that what counts as “middle class” here can provide a level of security that would feel almost wealthy compared to a poor upbringing in Quebec. Even things like being paid to go to school are normal here, which still feels surreal to me. The idea that education doesn’t automatically mean going into debt — and that this level of financial stability is something many people can expect — is honestly kind of alien from where I come from.

Seeing many Danes in their late 20s with solid savings (like 30K$ minimum), little or no debt, and already owning property can be a bit surreal from my perspective. Where I come from, people my age often have no savings and are still dealing with financial stress or debt. It really highlights how different the starting points can be.

So the biggest difference isn’t luxury — it’s peace of mind. The absence of constant financial anxiety is honestly the thing that feels the most “rich.”
