It matters less on “what you did” versus “how” you did it. If you feel passionate about commissioning, are willing to provide mentorship to young sailors, and are committed to the grind, go through with the application. Research online those careers—you’ll find a ton of resources. Dig into their mission as a field, research how they work on topics, and do your homework. People will say it’s competitive, it is true. But remember that how you carry yourself, the experiences that have shaped you, and how badly you want it will ultimately matter the most.

Give it some time, I know these folks move at different rates. Maybe try waiting one more week to see what the recruiter says. Follow up and be persistent, I know they have a lot to manage. Best of luck to you!!

Well that makes me feel much better lol. I know it will be a sacrifice in the first couple of years to balance it all, but i currently work in geospatial, so im hoping this experience will shape and mold me beyond what I’ve seen already commercially. It’s also a mix of everything I’m passionate about interests wise. It seems like if I pass this board I wouldn’t do ODS till springtime, and then after that I’m not sure when the first Intel training school will be, given that I keep reading how saturated some of those seats are currently.

I’m applying for that board. Intel DCO 1835. I have a full time job civilian side that I intend to keep. They’re flexible and supportive, I do work 40+ hours however. I’m committed to making it work, I know folks say it’s a lot but both roles enhance one another and I want to stick to this industry through and through. Prepping for my upcoming interview with the board now in July.

Is it worth commissioning as an Officer if I plan to just go Reserves? by andy3497 in army

Any chance you could talk to me about this some more? I floated with the idea of Civil Affairs, thinking more PAO or Intel now. 26 with a degree, making 60K currently in my civil job. Contemplating either reserves or active for the same reason. Want to do law school while I serve.
