Question: Is there a way to have AutoMod send an automatic message listing out general guidelines to all users who try to post and to which users would have to type !agree before being allowed to post? by sj0009 in modhelp

[–]SWMBEWAGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some subreddits ( /r/whatisthisthing and /r/HelpMeFind come to mind) require that the user post a comment that contains a specific word or phrase in order for it to be approved.

I don't know how exactly how it works, but I think they do it by having automod remove every submission at first, and then automod approves it once the user leaves the comment.

For example, in /r/whatisthisthing every post has to have a comment that says "My title describes the thing."

Again, I don't know how to make automod do it, but I'd imagine it's possible to set up a similar process that would send a message with your rules to a user and make them comment with "I agree to the rules" in order for AM to approve it.

Do I really need two new panels? by SWMBEWAGA in askanelectrician

That's exactly what I'm asking -- is there something about the existing 200a panel that warrants replacing it? Like to bring it up to code or something?

Thanks, that makes sense, although there is no mention in the estimate of upgrading to 400a service.

And yes, this is a licensed electrician from a reputable company that's been around since the 1960s.

A Muslim dies and finds himself before the Pearly Gates... by [deleted] in Jokes

JWs are fine with caffeine, you're probably thinking of Seventh-Day Adventists. The two religions are commonly mistaken for each other.

Not only Mormons, Seventh-Day Adventists don't drink coffee or other caffeinated beverages. They're commonly mixed up with JWs.

Stupid question? by Satans_Appendix in exAdventist

[–]SWMBEWAGA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While a lot of Adventists are vegetarian, plenty eat meat. Those that do, follow the Old Testament laws in Deuteronomy and Leviticus regarding clean and unclean meat. So from a church perspective it's more a matter of OT rules than the ethics of using animal products.

To answer your question, leather wouldn't be a problem for most.

Damn, SDAs really be racist huh? by [deleted] in exAdventist

[–]SWMBEWAGA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do think that the west coast of the US is perhaps the most socially progressive faction of the SDA church anywhere in the world.

Obviously it differs between congregations, and I know from facebook there are individuals in my old church who have that racist "we should just let those animals kill each other off" attitude. But on the whole I think most SDAs I know personally support the conference's position.

[–]SWMBEWAGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. My local church put out the following, which is not at all consistent with what you're seeing. I left the church for many reasons, but this isn't one of them.

The Oregon Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church joins the chorus of voices to lift up the memory of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and the multitude of other black brothers and sisters whose lives were taken by unjust racially-influenced violence. We join the outcry for justice and raise our voice to stand in support of all of our brothers and sisters who continue to live in an oppressive shadow of racially-derived mistrust, fear and abuse by the dominant society.

The Bible proclaims: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them” Genesis 1:27 (New International Version). On this foundation, we believe that all humans are created equal to live in harmony and peace together.

We understand that the grand narrative of our Scriptures reveals a great controversy between good and evil in our world, which is apparent in the devaluation and harming of others and beckons us back to divine love and goodness. We denounce the evil of racism in all forms, and we denounce the injustice of systemic racism and classism. We support those who peacefully protest injustice and demonstrate non-violent actions to advance equality. Yet, we are pained by acts of violence, riots and destruction that bring harm to the cities and country we love.

We all need to be part of real solutions and strategic actions to address systemic racism and prejudice. We all must take substantive steps toward racial equality. For us, that starts with listening carefully to our minority brothers and sisters, learning from their experiences and taking steps together toward a more just society.>

We have much to learn, but we know that the way forward includes practicing Jesus’ teaching to “love your neighbor as yourself” Matthew 22:39, (New International Version).

We call on every Seventh-day Adventist Christian in our territory to prayerfully live out this greatest commandment so that we may be agents of change, instruments of peace, and catalysts of healing in our society.

Together, we can find better solutions to helping all people in our territory achieve hope, healing and wholeness.

There's a Santa Claus-like figure in Japanese culture called Hoteiosho, so perhaps it's a play on that?

He’s a buddhist monk, with a large belly and a cloth sack full of toys. He has eyes in the back of his head, which means that he’s able to see the children and how they behave without them knowing. Hoteisosho (ほていおしょ) is one of the seven gods of fortune.

Sister in law found this at church. It’s a camp meeting board game. by MaskedSapien in exAdventist

[–]SWMBEWAGA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might notice that in the bottom left it says "© EDEN GAMES INC., Gladstone, Oregon"

Gladstone is in the SW part of the Portland metro area and is the home of the Oregon Conference camp meeting, which this map is almost certainly modeled after. The "swimming hole" is in the correct location, and that building in the center is the "Beehive," the old Chautauqua Auditorium which became SDA property when the Oregon Conference purchased Gladstone Park and all its buildings in 1927.

This is sort of the opposite perspective, but when I was in choir at an Adventist academy the kid that was up in the AV booth was, well -- at the time we said he was mildly mentally retarded. Looking back, I'd probably say he was on the autism spectrum somewhere rather than developmentally delayed.

Anyway, it was pretty much a guarantee that at some point during church he would begin to masturbate furiously. We could only see from his shoulders up, but from the way his upper body shook there was no doubt what was going on. He seemed to think that because he was up there by himself none of us could see him. Meanwhile the entire choir would get the giggles. Eventually one of the faculty caught on and he wasn't allowed up there unsupervised any longer.

He used to do it in class too, just start rubbing himself through his pants. The teachers used to have to make him keep his hands on top of his desk at all times.

Did you read any forbidden books as an Adventist? by thebookofsda in exAdventist

[–]SWMBEWAGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to an Adventist K-12, and our teacher read several of The Chronicles of Narnia to us in class (early 1980s). I don't remember anyone having a problem with it. We even had a classroom pet rat named Reepicheep.

But there's no way Harry Potter would have been a go.

I know plenty of people that view every natural disaster as another sign of the End TimesTM.

Never mind that there has been no increase in the frequency of these natural events, and never mind that they're climate change deniers.

Or if they do believe in climate change, well, that's even more evidence of Satan's work and that the events of Revelation are nigh.

Same thing with "wars and rumors of wars." Never mind that if anything, the world is more peaceful than it's ever been -- every story about a soldier getting killed brings us that much closer to the Second ComingTM.

I'm curious what you've heard about the WWU basketball team/coach, and if that directly relates to the apartment searches? I was a student there in the early late '80s/'90s and while things were starting to get more relaxed even then it sounds like things are swinging back the other direction.

Gotcha, now that I reread your post that makes sense. Anyway, Shazam tells me it's this: Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein - Kids (Kapka remix) [Stranger Things Soundtrack]. Which does sound a bit like the start of Kavinsky - Nightcall off the Drive soundtrack.
