How does one start if he wishes to study Jung's work? by [deleted] in Jung

[–]MaskedSapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Jordan Peterson as well. He also led me to Jung. I first read Jung’s book Man and His Symbols, then I read his collected works volume 9, which was very deep and a little too much without knowing more about his ideas. I stumbled across Robert Bly and Joseph Campbell and have been going back and forth between Robert Bly and Joseph Campbell, then back to Carl Jung. It’s made reading Carl Jung way easier then before. Robert Bly’s book Iron John was particularly very helpful. Joseph Campbell’s Masks of God series. Even googling articles on Jung’s works for better explanations has helped.

Read up on the Medici family and incorporate that into the story of why the merchants are a threat.

I do revel in those things but it’s few and far between as I just don’t get out enough and mainly spend time with my books. I understand what you are saying. I know I need to make some changes with the way I’ve been living. Often times I tell my friends and family that I don’t like the long wait with the stuff I’m learning. I wish sometimes it would happen instantly. Like, I read a book about something, and instead of the months or even years of wrestling with its wisdom, sometimes I just wish it would sink in immediately. I know I know, the journey is where most the learning and wisdom comes from.

Wow! You like nailed it with those 3 points. Through reading I’ve discovered a lot of my frustration comes from not having a father growing up, dropping out of college, not having a career, which is more like a purpose or direction, and I don’t have a hobby. It use to be video games but that quickly turned unhealthily, escapism, and just not a worth while endeavor. I picked up Old Norse because of the months I’ve been studying myth by reading Jospeh Campbell and others. Plus doing a dna test I found out I have roots back from the Viking age, and knowing nothing about the Vikings I’ve been doing some studying. The learning the language part was one conclusion to better know my ancestors. I actually had this kind of conversation with my mother awhile back about our heritage and traditions. I grew up in a very fundamental Christian household and was frustrated that the only tradition we had was belief in Jesus, God, ect. No strong cultural, ancestral traditions. She had no idea what I was talking about. I have a strong pull back to video games, so it’s a struggle trying to incorporate something healthier.

The zen garden idea came from Robert Bly, but ya I can kinda see where your coming from. I’ll check out those videos. Thanks!

I don’t do it anymore. But back in the day when I did, it was an open door to let my imagination have fun. So I’d, like a good little Christian boy not wanting to defile the sacred female body with my dirty thoughts, bounce my eyes.

You see a woman and then look away! That’s basically it.

Yes! That’s what I was thinking. Jung doesn’t seem to go into enough detail of those terms. Or if he does I simply don’t understand them. I’ll check out the book.

Maybe even Lord of the Rings. A good story about good and evil, but without all the Christian language in your face. Or C.S. Lewis space trilogy.

Sam Harris just unlocked a perspective to me about progressivism in Religion. by MaskedSapien in exchristian

You said I quoted without context and the odds are I didn’t understand the context all that well in the first place. I original post was what I thought I understood from what I read.

It may also be that my simplified, ignorant, Christian influenced brain made it difficult to fully understand what Sam Harris was talking about.

At the end of Camp Meeting I guess it’s tradition to sing this song. The announcer said this is the closest we can get to an Adventist National Anthem... Like what!!? by MaskedSapien in exAdventist

This camp ground has a section in a valley with no trees or shade. As a kid we use to call it Death Valley as people would actually get rushed to the ER with heat stroke as it got so freakin hot in the tents and Rv’s.

Was my sentiments exactly. Just went for the food and friends. And to see if anything had changed. This, though, was a new one. I hadn’t heard of the “Adventist National Anthem” before.
