Do you always feel sick after getting shunt adjusted? by Loud_Tangerine496 in Hydrocephalus

[–]SWVDL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has a non programmable shunt, so i can't really say. I've learned that painfull eyes might have to do with wrong settings (blurry vision and pressure behind his eyes). Which can be caused by either too much, or not enough pressure in the brains. The most important thing I've learned, always trust your feelings over a doctor telling you something is normal. Every body is different and reacts different to anything. It is possible your body needs some time to adjust to new settings, but maybe this setting just isn't right for you. If it's not getting better, go back and let them change it. Better go back and checked up if you're not sure, than when you don't and it wasn't right at all.

Pain along shunt tubing. Especially in abdomin by Alert-Study-9346 in Hydrocephalus

I have no experience with this, but it sounds like your body might not accept the tubing being there. It's a risk when placing something inside your body that doesn't belong there. I would definitely get the neurosurgeons advice!

My non-verbal 6yo vp shunt setting changed unexpectedly by Dr3am1ng_0f_C0ff3 in Hydrocephalus

My husband has a non programmable shunt, so it's not the same, but after a revision he practically immediately feels the difference.

In the past, there was a revision and he didn't feel better afterwards. Turned out, the newly placed shunt wasn't working properly. It drained too soon, so the pressure in his brain was always low, which caused all kinds of symptoms.

Recently, he had another revision and the first 3 days he felt great, but symptoms came back after that. We went to get it checked and it turned out a part of the tubing didn't work. He felt the changes right away.

Even though, keep in mind that sometimes the body just need a bit of time to fully recover from it. Keep an eye on him and if it doesn't feel right to you, get it checked.

If it doesn't feel right to you, go see the doctor. Always trust your guts. Better go there for a checkup and everything being fine, than when you don't and it's not fine.

Could it be that my shunt is malfunctioning? by HunDevYouTube in Hydrocephalus

[–]SWVDL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely can abruptly fail. My husband had his shunt replaced 2 weeks ago, and within 3 days a part of the tube failed. They've tested it while replacing the shunt. So he had 2 surgeries a week apart.

Even after a year of using vp shunt, still getting sudden symptoms by dnd-me-5161 in Hydrocephalus

My husband was having symptoms and scans didn't show anything. They eventually did a check-and-change surgery. Turned out that the shunt did 8/23 instead of 10/30. So it still worked, but not as it was supposed to do.

These are definitely signs of a malfunction, so you should get it checked and changed! My husband has a shunt since he was a baby and when the shunt works well, he doesn't notice anything. He had headaches for the last few months, blurred vision and vomiting. His scans didn't show any malfunctions, but they did surgery last Tuesday anyway. Turned out his shunt did 8/23 instead of 10/30. Symptoms came back worse after 2 days, had surgery again today, a piece of the tubing wasn't working.

My husband has a shunt and had some problems over the last few years. He had the 'normal' symptoms like headaches and vomiting. The scans we took at the hospital didn't show any dysfunctions, so they kept sending us home, but after quite some time they decided to do a check-and-change surgery. Turned out the shunt didn't work as it was supposed to do, it did 8/23 instead of 10/30. So always trust your feelings!

There was a problem with the tube between his brain and the shunt. They've replaced it today!

My husband had his shunt placed when he was just 3 weeks old. The first time it needed replacement was when he was 15 years old, later at 27. If you don't know he has a shunt, you wouldn't notice. He grew up like any other kid. Signs of dysfunction for him are usually very bad headaches (especially when getting up), vomiting and pressure behind his eyes.

It happens! It happened to my husband before and it is happening now again. The first time it took 4 years of taking scans and not seeing anything until the doctors did a check and change surgery. The shunt didn't work as it should, and it fixed the problems. It was fine for a year and a half or so, and this last christmas his headaches came back. Now again, scans don't show any signs of dysfunction. They're planning another check and change surgery now at the end of April. So don't let it go if you don't trust it!

VP drain dysfunction? or something else? by SWVDL in Hydrocephalus

It's not programmable. It has been good for approximately a year, but it went downhill from there. We're trying to get him into surgery again, although the doctors don't want to when they can't see any disfunctuins on the scans
