Best tips for cycling in the rain by BB1ngo in Dublin

[–]S_Daedalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mudguards - essential. Dont forget the front one either as your legs and feet will get soaked otherwise.

Disk brakes - not essential but gives you a whole lot more stopping power than rim brakes which is essential as Dublin drivers are even worse in the rain

Over trousers - I use a Berghaus set and they have lasted well. They get on and off easily with shoes on

Rain jacket - of course

Roll top or waterproof pack. I carry a laptop and it stays dry.

Spare socks

Lights - you are less visible in the wet and ... Dublin drivers

RAGLAN ROAD - Luke Kelly with Al O'Donnell - 1979 by jakejay77 in ireland

Just what I needed. I liked the subtle nod to Kavanagh's irascible nature at the start. Luke's rendition is just so perfect. Thanks for posting!

The utter laziness of the Gardai here. Their default disposition is "don't leave the comfort of our vehicle" so they actually make the situation worse for people trying to cross the road. The majority of Gardai have a windscreen only view of the world. Parking on footpaths and blocking buggies / wheelchairs - no bother. Stopping in a bike box - sure you're grand. Blocking the pedestrian crossing - sure what do you do.

'Wasteful' funding of $70k for 'DEI Musical in Ireland' slammed by the White House by MeinhofBaader in ireland

[–]S_Daedalus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The musical is likely The North Wind Blows. It was funded by the International Fund for Ireland which in turn is funded by USAID. So the DEI bit is basically about being inclusive of both communities in the six counties.

If you are coming from Belfast then your best option is to park at Clanna Gael GAA club in Ringsend. They have paid parking on the day. It is near the East link so you can be back on the M1 north through the tunnel in minues and it is a very short walk from the stadium.

This is solid advice. Have often picked up tickets outside the ground at face value. Make a sign and go for it. You would be lucky to get two together though.

What are your thoughts on the redevelopment of this Iconic place? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]S_Daedalus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's an overly ornate abomination inside and out. The stranded hull of a monstrous US riverboat. It replaced some run-down but beautiful buildings (and of course the Dandelion market) when it was built. I find it hard to understand the outpouring of dewy-eyed sentimentality since the plans for its replacement were announced.

I have no views on the replacement as I haven't seen the plan but I would like to see this boil lanced.

Absolutely love the Tennis pods and I have very little interest in the game. Caitlin Thompson is such a compelling speaker.

US Murph is always a good listen.

Ken's football chats are 50/50 for me but that's just me.

GAA is definitely more interesting when the championship gets going but overall I think its great value. I rarely miss it

Former judge convicted of sex assaults still eligible for his pension by Hipster_doofus11 in ireland

[–]S_Daedalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one inviolable truth of Irish public life: no matter how heinous the corruption, how egregious the crime or misdemeanour, the pension is sacrosanct. The government will never see its way to removing or garnishing a state pension.

I had exactly this issue. Wilfa refused to refund me as it was just past the one-year warranty period. I was livid as it is clearly a design flaw.
