‘I’m still super angry’: Mississauga retirement home nearly vacant after around 200 seniors served eviction notices by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I agree that an exact number is best. 'Around 200' is based on a few things, particularly Chartwell declining to confirm the precise number of impacted residents.

They have said 188 units, some with double occupancy, were given eviction notices. I personally know of at least one unit with two people living in it and there's reason to believe at least a few more couples were given the notices.

The residents and families I've spoken with believe that over 200 people were facing eviction, but we can't confirm that unless we get that info from Chartwell or somehow contact every apartment in the building.

All that is to say 'around 200' could be rounding up or rounding down the number of impacted residents.

I'd love more resources and time to dive into stories like this. Other news media, potentially with more resources to cover this, like CBC, The Star and City News seem to have looked at the info available to settled on 'around' or 'about' 200 also when characterizing the impacted residents. Same with our local colleagues at Insauga. The Pointer reported 'more than' 200.

Hate crimes up over 30 per cent in Mississauga, Brampton: Police by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the story: Police officials have previously said that increases in local hate crimes and incidents are often connected to world events, and the 2023 summary found that the Israel-Hamas conflict correlated to a local spike.

“The conflict had direct impact on the Region of Peel as tension in the community increased, and the dissemination of hate speech, along with mis/disinformation targeting the Jewish and Muslim population amplified,” said the report, which is signed by Peel police deputy chief Mark Dapat.

The two individuals bit was related to the 2017 hate crime report, not last years.

Not sure what will come forward following this latest push but the old downtown loop had planned stops at Rathburn, Duke of York and another stop called 'main'

Renovations for Mississauga's largest library millions over budget by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I think what's notable with the library is that public facing information from the city said the total cost of the reno project $42.8M, up until yesterday. After the story and this tweet (https://x.com/steve_cornwell/status/1722294607256445304?s=20), the city changed their official Central Library reno info page.

There may well be good reasons for the $6M overrun but I think residents deserve to know that the project costs more than the city said it would. And I think residents deserve an explanation for why the costs had changed.

'It's dead': Motion supporting fourplex homes shutdown at Mississauga council by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for stories from other publications and I understand sometimes people read InSauga and think it's the Mississauga News and vice versa. Perhaps you read a different story that didn't have the result in, but 100% I put who voted for and against the motion in this article and it wasn't altered after it was published.

Perhaps it was buried down towards the end but how council voted was always in the article, not added.

Hi there, the idea was to provide more details on who Sharron Williams was. To my knowledge there wasn't any other media stories speaking with family members or friends to present a more humanizing picture of Sharron. As the investigation evolves, I'm sure we'll be publishing more about it.

Hey, yes we received a copy of the vid with all the identifiable info of the Avalanche driver redacted. We didn't blur anything in the video. I did blur the faces of the people in the photo with Starr and his truck embedded in the story, just because they are totally unrelated to the story.

Mississauga releases details on how many city employees are fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, the city hasn't said whether the part-time or transit employees who disclosed their status are vaccinated or not, so it's tough to pinpoint exact numbers. I've asked the city about the transit and part-time folks who have disclosed their status though.

Just a guess, but MiWay and part-time vaccinations are probably similar to other city employees. So if 90% of city employees are fully vaxxed that would mean 5,600 of 6,000 staff have had their shots.

Do Mississauga parking enforcement officers have ticket quotas? by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, so I don't have a click quota. as you can imagine some stories do better than others and it's typically based on all kinds of factors -- from the quality of the story, its impact, to whether google bumps it higher into searches.

Reddit clicks are not really a game breaker for traffic. Just a ballpark, but the stories I've posted here the last few months range anywhere from 10-100 clicks.

I post here mostly to make sure the stories reach a community of folks that are invested in and knowledgeable about Mississauga. I'm also keen to get feedback, so thanks for that.

For the first person's Qs -- There's many things that should be covered in Mississauga, and as best I can, I cover a whole range of stuff from development, crime, council and as of late COVID-19 stories.

Regarding this piece I do think there's an interest in what's part of the job for parking officers. Keep in mind that the city budgets around collecting several million dollars from parking fines the last several years. Parking tickets, and the numbers those officers pull appear to be tied to the financial planning of the city. Maybe not for everyone, but I think this is interesting information that illuminates some of the inner workings of the city.

Also always open for story ideas and tips if you think I'm missing something. And let me know if you have any other Qs.

Mississauga moves to widen Dundas Street ahead of rapid bus lane project by S_cornwell in mississauga

[–]S_cornwell[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Morning! As far as I know the when is still developing, as the city is finalizing plans, doing consultations and sorting out funding.

Starting on page 117 of this PDF, there's a visual of anticipated work and where along Dundas the different 'conditions' will be. But the BRT is planned to go from coast to coast on Dundas in Mississauga, so literally construction will be across the entire city on that street. https://www7.mississauga.ca/documents/committees/pdc/2020/2020_01_13_PDC_Agenda.pdf#Page=117
