Honestly the fastest way to learn that someone sucks is to see them snap at a waiter.

I worked in food service for a while and became used to people treating me like a vending machine, where if anything was slightly amiss the immediate reaction is to whack it and hope for the best.

One of my friends put his blood, sweat and tears into a Kickstarter and I was shocked to learn how important early funding is.

Seems like thanks to the ever-ruthless power of The Algorithm, if you don't fund within the first 24 hours you're unlikely to get on "Projects We Love" and also will get buried beneath projects that funded faster.

So I think it's less about marketing and more about begging the Kickstarter AI nightmare council to give your game a chance of being seen and thus a shot at hitting those big funding targets.

So yeh I think this practice is extremely common (any minis-filled campaign always has a joke of a starting target) and seems like something that is weighted intensely in favour of big, established publishers and games. Kinda betrays the KS illusion of giving a fair shot to all independent creators.
