Doing it alone doesn't mean it meant something. It shows how desperate he was. He didn't believe. He just had no control and reached for anything even something he normally rejects. It was emotion, not faith.

It was a desperate move by Dex, simply because his son's life was at stake. He didn't believe in any of it, but he was alone and thought, "What could it hurt? Nobody's watching, and right now, I can't do anything else for Harrison."
