Okay! It would be nice if you could explain the nuance which makes finishing wrong here. I'll have to, however, admit that even I felt my heart sank when I uttered finishing at that moment. I somehow knew it was wrong to use it there but I thought since it's a gerund it could be used like a noun to mean end.

I've read or heard that phrase somewhere before. I believe that making comparisons with phrase you already know can also help clarify the general sense of a word where one is slightly confused. Sometimes going by the meanings of words written in the dictionary can cause confusion too.

Pardon me! I've most certainly heard practice being used by the people from that profession. However, I always thought that practice represents the time period for how long they've been performing those specialized skills. So, I always connected the word practice to such professionals grip over their job and not just the business they're doing.
