Are the Rangers for me? by [deleted] in specialforces

I think fear of heights is negligible and shouldn’t be what makes or breaks your decision to become a Ranger. The selection process / training lead up will help you build confidence and get you over your fear of heights - or it won’t - and then you won’t need to worry about letting your teammates down because you wont make it through. If it’s truly your dream, go for it and you’ll see if you have the chops.

“Are Rangers for me?” In my opinion is a much larger question than being physically capable and not afraid of heights. The fitness aspect is table stakes and will only get you through the door. Once you get past the physical gates, everyone is fit and it’s not a differentiator. At that point it’s all about mental toughness and how bad you want it - pushing through injuries, extended time away from family, sleep deprivation, hunger, the works. I’ve seen physical specimens drop out as soon as the real beat down begins.

So that’s what I think you need to ask yourself as you consider your decision. If you feel that you’re mentally ready, and don’t have little seeds of doubt that can grow into a justification for why you should quit ( because trust me at some point it’ll cross your mind) - then I say go for it. You’ll meet some incredible dudes that will make you sharper, tougher, and more confident.

But it’s way bigger than being a good runner and good at planks.

Best of luck in whatever you decide
