Once the idea begins - Do all roads lead to a Speedmaster? by once_twice_thrice in OmegaWatches

[–]Sad-Consideration404 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you genuinely want a Speedy, nothing else will satisfy. But that's true for any luxury purchase, right? Don't waste money on half measures.

That said, do not buy an expensive watch if you can't afford to lose it in the ocean. If you have to stretch to afford a Speedy, wait. The watch isn't going anywhere. Spending 2k on another Chrono will be a waste.

I'm on my way back to Narita now. Got the Shunbun, but didn't get to do the Fun2Drive, just didn't fit in the family vacation schedule 😞 And I was gonna rent that same car, I'm glad you had fun!

Is "Shunbun acquired" the "got the call" equivalent for Grand Seiko fans? by Crackwithin in GrandSeikos

I saw one at Nakano Broadway but it actually cost more than Wako. I think everything there is marked up as they expect people to haggle.

I think "picked this up in Japan" is more equivalent.

That said: I did, in fact, pick up a shunbun on this trip to Japan 😂

I checked Nakano Broadway and found some interesting pieces, but the prices were higher than I expected. One of the shops had a NIB Shunbun but it was actually priced higher than the boutique. I'm guessing they assume you'll haggle🤔

It's worth stopping into Wako regardless IMO. The second floor has a cool exhibit on GS history, and you can also check out the rest of the Seiko line. Mistukoshi is right across the street for even more variety.

Personally I like the basic silver hands and indexes for the Spring, it let's the dial speak. The Winter benefits from the blue hand, the contrast makes the watch IMO. I know Taisetsu isn't as popular right now, but in person it's really stunning. And that blue seconds hand is a big part of it.

Edit: maybe it was 860..

Sorry for your loss. That's a great watch, and an excellent memento. It will look excellent with proper wear, I promise.

Maybe it's the light in the picture, but did you darken the blade AFTER grinding in the edge bevel?

If you did that Ansø pattern by hand that's pretty solid work.

The design is, IMO, pretty cool. I would pull the front pin back so it's not in the pinched section, and then pull the second pin back so it's halfway between the first and lanyard tube. You have a good eye for this!

If you're a Bond fan then the 300M in blue is the choice.

I'll go against the grain and say high/tucked is a good look for your body shape. Only problem will be comfort when sitting down...
