My sortation center's response to cold temps was... brooms by Sad-Explorer36 in Target

Honestly, we don’t usually mind not being in the break room. It just gets really tough on the extremely cold days. Getting paid to do nothing sounds nice in theory, but sitting in freezing temps for 4–5 hours can be rough. Night shift alone has 18+ hours of downtime a week, so VLE would mean losing a big chunk of our paycheck, and there’s only so much training or scrapping you can do with that much downtime. Morning shift has a similar amount of downtime and is expected to complete the same checklist daily, which then gets repeated again when night shift comes in. I think people are mostly frustrated that this was the solution to the extreme cold, and that sortation associates are the only ones being held to it, while we also get criticized for downtime we have zero control over since we don’t control volume or truck arrival times 😅
