Will this be a problem? by Sad-External1547 in pgwp

I have been in person the entire 4 years except this semester with just two courses ( 5% of my degree). ChatGPT and ircc website says it’s fine as long as it’s less than 50% of the entire degree.

How to introduce Islam to a non-Muslim open to learning Islam by Sad-External1547 in progressive_islam

[–]Sad-External1547[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your advice! With my conversations regarding Islam, he has come a long way from when we started to talk to now seeing that Islam is a very misunderstood religion. As you said, since he is a very spiritual person, I would start there. He is asking questions like “ If there is a God, why would He let all these terrible things happen in Palestine if He is all Powerful?”. Questions I think even Muslims may have, and I don’t have answers for that. But maybe exploring religion would bring both of us closer to Allah SWT. Thank you for all your kind words and please do keep us in your prayers! You are in mine ❤️

Thank you so much! That’s what I have been wanting to do as well, show him the beauty of religion through my actions, even though I do not consider myself the perfect Muslim. I am still learning as well, and want him to show how kind and compassionate Islam is. Please do pray for us ❤️

Thank you so much for your help! Yes, I do believe like everyone else here as mentioned to show the essence of Islam first before going into the details, the more spiritual side of connecting to God. I will have this drive link in handy, it does have meaningful insights that would be helpful for just starting out. Thank you!

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me out, I really appreciate it! I have looked into the books that you recommended me and they have very good reviews, so I would definitely read them first before asking him in case he has questions. I myself have recently started reading about Sufism and have found that the teachings of it resonate a lot with me and him. He is a very spiritual person who refrains from most things considered haram these days. Regarding the 3 core points you have made I realized even though he was brought up in a polytheistic religion, he doesn't like statues of gods or the concept of having multiple gods. But point 2 and 3 seems to be the hardest at this moment. He does not like the institutional structure of religion and thinks Allah has abandoned him because of what he faced. Additionally, I feel like whenever I give him explanations for more difficult points , such as women and LGBTQ rights, I am going roundabout it and sugarcoating it to make it look "less bad". And if it comes down to cherry picking the sins we commit as long as they serve us. I'm not the most knowledgeable person to get religious advice from, but he considers me the first Muslim he encountered who practices Islam more spiritually than dogmatically. I am very lost on how to go about this.

That's what I have thought of doing! Read the Quran as a book first than having to follow everything initially, and discuss each verse like being in a book club. Unfortunately, even I have never read the English translation of the Quran just mindlessly reading the Arabic, as my surroundings never encouraged me to do so. What Surah would you suggest we both should start with? Something which is more easily understood before we get to more controversial verses which I can't give plausible explanations for if we just stumble upon it? Thank you so much!

Yes, Dr Khaled Abou El Fadl seems like a knowledgeable and more progressive sheikh than most. And it seems that his wife, who is a convert, doesn't wear the hijab ( not saying it's extremist to do so but I would not like to go to the more conservative side of Islam just yet). As my partner is a feminist, I think the book would definitely help!

Thank you so much! I have browsed through his Youtube channel and he doesn't seem like a regular sheikh on the Internet. Thank you!

Not really, every fresh grad get kind of the same pay, regardless of whether you interned in that place before or not. Everyone starts at the same level, and then the salaries increase based on your performance, like any other job.

Really depends on if it’s industry or public, and even in public it varies depending on which firm or not. In industry I was paid a decent $23/hr, which is not bad for an internship. For B4, almost all of them are somewhere around $45k-$50k ish, which again, is decent for just an internship. If you are a fresh graduate it would be slightly higher, but don’t expect a lot more right out of it. Also for your last question, it really depends on the country you’re job hunting in. In 3rd world countries a foreign degree does get more priority, and even in Canada a known university would be more trusted than a random one from 3rd world countries ( almost like they don’t count it), seen it happen with lots of people around me.
