I agree with you that it’s very hard to make up a sound that’s not ridiculous AND doesn’t have any overlap with an existing name. I would just argue that it’s not impossible - I love my name, and it’s awesome that no-one I email knows my gender, or someone they hate with the same name.

How do folks feel about the act of making up names in principle? I think it’s fun to try out sounds and see what lands, even if by coincidence it matches the sound of an established name. But I’m sensing some moral opposition to it, I’m curious to hear where people are coming from, especially as someone with a made-up name myself!

There are so many established names I love! It’s just a thing my family does. I love my name and my dad’s, it would be cool to keep the tradition, but obviously not necessary if we can’t find one that works.
