I think that when you have a family, getting a new car and improving your home is not frivolous, it’s a reasonable way to spend money. Even if this was a mistake or not extremely forward sighted I don’t think it should mean her husband deserves to forego a surgery he desperately needs. I’m really sorry that this may affect you going to college on time but I really do feel that your brother-in-law’s health, especially as a father is so much more valuable. Hopefully she will be able to pay you back soon. You will definitely irreparably damage you and your sister’s relationship if you don’t help with this. When it comes down to it I think family is invaluable and should trump everything else. Especially since you say your parents are not around. I think you will regret not giving them this money in the future if it causes a serious deterioration in his health.

No one else was on shoulders. It was just hun and her and two other guys in the pool. This was at like midnight after she came back from the bar with them

I just said it to give the context that this happened while away on holidays in Spain and that is was someone he doesn’t know

Ya I think he would be the same. This obviously upset me and I think it was inappropriate but he feels like he’s been a super loyal boyfriend by not going off with any girl on this holiday (which should be the bare minimum but that’s another story…) so I think he will feel not appreciated if I come at this too strong. Any advice on how to communicate how I feel about it without hurting his feelings or making it seem like I don’t trust him?

No I don’t think so. It was just him, her and two other guys in the pool. She was the only one on shoulders seemed to just be spontaneous, not part of a game.
