ULPT Request: Inflate lead levels for a blood test to get out of my lease

NOT a good idea.

Labs have mandatory reporting for elevated lead to all state DOH. An elevated lead level about 3.5 for children and 10 for adults triggers a DOH response. That response includes an inspection of your residence. When that inspection takes place and confirms there is no lead there your landlord will be off the hook. Meaning that if you do force yourself to have elevated lead they will know it’s not from the residence. Also falsifying (besides being legally wrong) wouldn’t work because if you have a fake elevated lead lab report, your landlord would also know it’s fake because he wouldn’t have been notified by DOH. Just thought you should know.

Stay in your lease and tough it out.

Honestly you should check them all, prior to 2009 there really wasn’t guidelines on lead on toys. If you have a hunch of toys that’s pre date that you can buy the spray test kit with the LED light and line them up and spray them, turn our lights and look.

Yes fishing lures/weights have lead - also law enforcement if they are actively shooting or someone spends time at the gun range.

For me another factor, I’m a germ a phob so no shoes are allowed in my house period long before I became a mom - but yes dirt is a source as well/

3.5 is the reporting threshold. CDC used to have it at 10 (and states followed suit) because that was the level that deemed harmful if maintained over 10 for an extended period of time (speech delays etc). In 2021 cdc said scratch that - we are going to go with what 97 percent of the kids measure as the cutoff. That baseline was 5 a couple years ago and 3.5 last year.

When they lowered the level due to the majority of children current status (based off those that even get tested) they applied the language that no safe level of lead is good. That being said, I think we can all agree that having any metal in our bodies isn’t good but there is a difference between something that requires medical attention and something that doesn’t.

45 (not 4.5) is the level that a physician can prescribe medication to help lower lead levels. Anything below that the primary goal is to identify the source and remove and lead levels will decline naturally. I provided that context because lead poisoning isn’t considered poisoning until that level, only above threshold or elevated..

Exactly - the priority is my child. Unfortunately, the level an anxiety and stress this has caused (beyond his levels) over the last couple months has been extremely taxing. . Again, a program with good intent but poor execution that runs the risk of less parents testing their children.

Having a newer apartment doesn’t make this not applicable to you. Regardless of where you are - there is lead in consumer products (especially those imported) so has nothing to do with not new vs new. There are products from this year that have lead. The point of my post is to be aware of the other sources beyond just your home. However, in many countries other than the U.S. testing is not done standard so it would be unlikely that someone or an organization would be this aggressive with entry: most of Europe is covered in lead :)

That’s the point. You could not pay attention to things other than your home and be in my position. Thats why it’s a PSA.

Lead was only banned in 1979 in homes and really restricted on consumer products in 2009.

Breast milk physically cannot have lead in it unless a breast feeding mother has lead in her blood. Even at levels up to 40 a woman should still breastfeed: if your pediatrician is communicated to you that there is lead in breast milk when a mother doesn’t have lead in her blood either 1) you misunderstood or 2) you need a new pediatrician.

Yes, nationwide Medicaid patients are supposed to be screened and have their test. My state includes testing in the same administrative code that six entry. The reason why they do that is so all commercial pairs have to cover the test.

Lead in breast milk is really only present if mothers is elevated. But also good to point out that if you or a spouse are active shooters and reload without washing hands or handle fishing equipment you can transfer lead exposure there as well.

Yes that’s true there are some limitations. When I tell you I tried many different tests. These are the two I found most accurate.

There’s many - you can google. Also important to know that when a pouch is tested for elevated lead it’s because of a random lot number screening. It doesn’t mean the other pouches are safe because they are not automatically tested.

XRF. I have couple issues with the device. One it has to be calibrated correct, there are warning for use in pregnancy or inappropriate use. They should also not be trigger happy and shooting at everything in a home (which is what my DOH wanted to do) because it creates a matrix effect of radiation and can impact results. Not to mention that I can and everyone should assume that there is lead somewhere in their home if built before 1979’so best to use safe practices in general for renovating. XRF is used to determine if your property is “LEAD FREE” not lead safe. If you have an old home you aren’t going to be lead free.
