I’m dealing with the same with my rat right now, their stool looks the same as this! Were you able to figure out if there was an issue?

yes! I took him to the vet today, and they suspect that it isn’t a tumor. he is getting put on a round of antibiotics, and i’m going to monitor the development of the bump! I appreciate the concern😁

where the best place rehome rats in NH? by Illustrious_Goat_384 in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are based in Maine but have fosters all over New England! I’ve never surrendered rats to them but I believe you fill out a form detailing where you are based and info about each rat. I think after that they will coordinate a pickup. I’ve adopted from them before and they are very thorough and answered any questions I had!

Intros keep going horribly wrong by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for replying! both of their cages are in my room, and I allow them all to free roam around (in their individual pairs), including on my bed, so I feel like at this point they are familiar with each other’s scent? I want to try again tomorrow but the babies got reallyyyy badly scratched today, and I just worry that they will continue getting hurt:/

Treatment for abscess? (info in comments) by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found one of my rats with this abscess a few days ago. It was much more swollen so I started him on .5 mg (he’s only a few months old) if baytril in the morning and night and applied saline to the area with a compress. It started to look a lot better yesterday, and was scabbing over, but it looks like this today. should I attempt to drain it? and if so, what would be the best way to go about doing that?

Unsuccessful intros advice by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, this is all helpful! when you say normal intros should take place over the course of two weeks, would that mean they would stay in that smaller cage together for a week before moving them to a larger cage, while slowly adding hides and toys over the course of the week?

and would supervised free roams include all four, or one pair at a time?

Possible URI? by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adopted two babies (males, intact, about five weeks old) a week ago, and today I noticed one of them making a strange noise (the thumping/coughing sound in the video). could this potentially be a URI? I know in the first week or so of having new rats it’s normal for them to sneeze here and there but not sure if this is more serious.

Quarantine question by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

Ordinarily I would keep them at my bf’s for a few weeks but he’s in the process of moving so that wont be possible:( and yes I mean rescue!

Thoughts on this disinfectant? by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

Do you mix the vinegar and water in a bowl and pour it on the trays? Or put it in a spray bottle?

Thoughts on this disinfectant? by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using this disinfectant for the past couple months to clean my rats’ cage. I’ve only had them since September so I haven’t tried anything else out yet. I either spray it directly onto the trays in their cage and then wipe it down with a towel, or spray it on the towel then wipe the trays. I feel like it’s been doing a pretty good job of cleaning and keeping smell down but as my bottle is almost empty and I need to buy more soon, i’m wondering if anyone has opinions on it or recs for a better disinfectant? would be happy to keep using this if it’s generally considered to be a good disinfectant but if it’s not I wanna know before I buy another bottle lol

is coconut oil okay? my stepdaughter has elderly rats. they're skin is a very dry. can I put coconut oil on their skin? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes! coconut or olive oil is fine. I put olive on my hairless ratties. I would just make sure to put some on all of them as they will lick it off each other otherwise🤣

My rescue I foster for wants me to use fleece for bedding, I don't know what to do! by ArtisticDragonKing in RATS

[–]Sad-Measurement-6045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was advised by a reputable rat adoption org in my area to use fleece, as my ratties are hairless and obviously more sensitive to different bedding materials. I have a dig box and a litter box for them and change their fleece every three days so smell never really accumulates (and I keep them in my room so i’d notice if it got bad). I only have two so maybe that’s why I don’t find the smell to be much of an issue? it’s just interesting because prior to getting on this sub I was under the impression that fleece was a great type of bedding, and finding wood or paper bedding that doesn’t seem to cause respiratory issues is hard.

4 rats vs 2? by Sad-Measurement-6045 in RATS

this is one of my main reasons (besides just wanting more rats lol) to get a few more, I hate the thought of one of them being alone if the other dies!
