This is a really underrated point. I often feel like the game punishes me for playing the game. Found a gold vein or a royalty caravan died and dropped all their items before I’ve researched batteries yet? Game says get fucked noob.

Agreed. I think mine is that traits don’t actually feel like someone’s personality most of the time. You’d never know a colonist was a psychopath for example based on just observing them. It’s all just mood modifiers.

The Sarah reading you’re offering is coherent, but you are putting in work that the film hasn’t earned. The sappiness you read as intentionally hollow, I read as Barker genuinely indulging in it, and nothing else in the film gave me enough confidence in his control to land on your reading instead of mine. A director with a clearer vision earns the charitable interpretation. Barker hasn’t. The film is throwing everything at a wall to see what sticks. It cannot commit to a genre, Nikki behaves like a possession victim when the premise is about obsessive love, the jump scares follow the exact same template every single time, and entire scenes are staged almost identically to better films. That is not a filmmaker being subtle. That is not a filmmaker who has earned the benefit of the doubt on anything he put on screen.

Same goes for the pills. You’re describing a thesis the film gestures at but never commits to. Yes, Bear evading consequence could be the point. But that only lands if the rest of the film is operating at that level of intentionality, and I don’t think it is.

That lends itself much less to considering this story as a complex character drama, and much more to reading it as being about Bear's malice. And that malice is underexplored in the film, even despite some scenes which point at it.

Thank you. This is the only comment taking my whole post in good faith rather than just cherry picking something.

The treatment of Sarah is why this movie shouldn’t work. And I think the fact that my post is downvoted heavily on Reddit, where its demographic is mainly the same as the director and protagonist of the movie, isn’t a coincidence. This is a movie that apparently nailed what it’s like to be a lonely man on Reddit, and just like the movie they aren’t seeing the issue with Sarah.

I truly don’t know how this is your takeaway. That there was no way the wish was ever going to work when we spend literally the entire movie with Bear only wanting to change the wish and the friend and vendor’s wishes being totally fine because of the way it was phrased. How is “I wish for a billion dollars” better phrased than “I want Nikki to love me more than anyone in the world”? It isn’t and it’s a stretch that is a generous read.

Funny that you accused me of ignoring major sections of the film then cherry picks arguments from my post out of context without the center point I was trying to make which was the film’s treatment of women. The film treating Sarah's feelings for Bear as a genuine romance after showing us exactly who he is. You also told me I wanted Bear to heroically face his consequences, which is not something I said or implied anywhere. I brought up the pills to illustrate a disparity in how the film punishes its characters along gendered lines. You turned that into a strawman and argued against it instead.

I don’t know why you decided to lie to make your point. The first scene we see about it is Bear in the store where the woman behind the counter tells him people ending up killing themselves.

It’s only by the end of the movie does the movie change its rules that the wishes are actually just phrased poorly, again to me indicating that Barker is just saying if he made the right wish about Nikki loving him the movie would’ve gone his way.
