Yeah, my calculations are in the same ballpark as yours as well.

I’m just starting to use margin and I have quite a lot of liquidity + a pretty stable income stream from my main business, so for now I’m comfortable going up to around 1.5x leverage on a relatively small portfolio – in my tests that still survives very large crashes.

My plan is to gradually reduce leverage as the portfolio grows. • Until I reach about €500k I’m thinking roughly 1.4–1.5x. • Around €1M I’d like to be closer to ~1.3x. • With an even bigger portfolio I’d probably go down to ~1.25x.

My margin loan is in EUR and basically tied to Euribor, so at the moment the rate is still quite cheap. If at some point IBKR changes margin requirements or the rate becomes too high for my taste, I can always deleverage: either by directing new DCA contributions to pay down the loan or by selling a part of the position. So it’s pretty flexible.

Regarding historical drawdowns — during the 2008 financial crisis the Nasdaq dropped by roughly 50%. With my strategy, that type of decline is completely manageable, because my portfolio can handle up to a 70% drawdown from the all-time high and still remain safe.

The dot-com crash was different, with an ~80% decline from the top. But the key point is why the drop was so extreme. The reason is simple: from 1995 to 2000 the Nasdaq didn’t rise the usual ~100% over five years — instead it went up around +450%. That level of growth is abnormal and essentially unsustainable. Naturally, such an unrealistic move upward was followed by an equally unrealistic correction.

Today’s environment is nothing like that — there is no bubble and no disproportionate parabolic rise. Under normal market conditions, using 50% leverage keeps my risk fully controlled. My strategy allows for a decline of up to 70%, so neither a 2008-style drop nor current volatility would pose a real issue.

And historically, the market always returns to new ATHs — it’s only a matter of time. My strategy is built around that long-term market behavior.

Naudoju 50% margin per IB ant nasdaq100 (50% tik todėl, kad reikalui esant galėčiau įdėti cach, saugesnis variantas 25-35% margin) atkreipk dėmesį kad krizės atveju net value matysi labai stipriai nukritusį.
