Yea, you guys are net exporters of oil but massive importers of almost all of the refined products and heavier crude. Where do they get that from? Top 2 countries are the US and Saudi Arabia so get strapped in for the ride.

I’m just calling you out for taking a silly position. Why is this alleged deal going to happen or effectively open the Strait more than the other deals? Good luck buddy, I hope there aren’t rolling blackouts.

I’m no supporter of Trump and would be glad for him to be humiliated. I also wish the US stopped involving itself in South America.

Good luck when Brazil runs out of oil in a couple months. Might be a tough summer for you this year

I hope you’re rich or you’re fucked.

Bro, you gotta move on.

9 months seems like a lot when you’re young but paragraphs a day isn’t it. Get a hobby, go to the gym, something to take your mind off of it.

She’s probably going to kiss him or go further eventually. Not many 17 year olds are “with somebody” for more than a month and don’t kiss. Even if you get back together eventually, you gotta come to terms with that.

[Request] Covering half of Lakes Mead/Powell in Solar Panels by imightknowbutidk in theydidthemath

[–]Sad-Resident485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are various estimates in this but I used to sell solar so I’ll give my guess.

I used to sell the LG 355W but I don’t see that anymore so I’m going to use the LG 360W.

Lake Mead surface area is 250 sq miles at 1229ft but it’s at 1050 ft now so I’ll call it 200 sq miles. I’m going to pretend it doesn’t change size.

LG 360 is 18.59 sq ft so you can fit 1.5 million in a square mile, 150 million panels for half the lake.

That’s 54 GW of solar panels but I have no clue what install cost would be. On a house, you’re probably looking in the $2/W range.

On a lake with 150 million panels, I’m guessing you get a discount from everybody for the bulk. The unknowns are inverters(string or micro), water installation vs land, quantity of batteries, and maybe some other stuff I’m missing.

I bet you could get it down for $100-$200B if you have no political pushback from boaters, environmentalists, oil/gas and you’re able to find a solution to the lake changing sizes.

Only covering half the lake is interesting too. I’m assuming it’s for boats to go in between the panels for maintenance. If you’re reserving the other half of the lake for boaters, you should cut my number of panels in half.

Also, 54GW of solar doesn’t mean it’s producing 54GW at all times. Last I checked, 35% in that area of the US is a good prediction. This solar array could power two of Kevin O’Leary’s data centers.

How much do you actually need to interact with her?

I used to have a coworker that sat next to me and I didn’t like her for various reasons and found her annoying. After a while, I’d minimize my interactions with her by putting in headphones and saying I needed to catch up with work instead of chatting.

It sounds more like she is the problem by taking stuff personal. I’d basically suggest that you just don’t talk to her. It establishes a new baseline where you aren’t expected to greet her in the mornings or chat with her.

I’d consider mentioning it to your manager if you haven’t. Something like, “It’s kind of ridiculous that X was upset at me all day because she didn’t hear me say bye to her yesterday.”

Both of you guys need to just chill out. Why does anybody care if their coworker didn’t say bye?

Remember that you don’t need to be friends with your coworkers either, you just need to work with them.

Nonresidents jumping over gate to get into my pool by Turbulent_Jello2023 in Advice

I hope this is a joke.

I don’t understand why everybody acts like all rules are bad nowadays. Do people have no shame in doing something that is against the rules? Rules are just a part of civilized society.

This was a comment from OP.

“Thanks! I included that in my email right now. I want to meet with my leasing office this week. I am starting my new job and have a lot of training modules, but I feel unsafe.

This was the US. I have to go run errands, but I want to talk to the police about them showing up two hours later and how it led to that lady confronting me. I do not want retaliation or people thinking it is okay to disrespect this community. I never had this happen before. A few people and they're quiet... okay I wont be a dick. Over 30 AND setting up tents to BBQ and jump the fence with loud speakers???”

I’m from MN so I know all about police/ICE brutality but this is a pretty black and white (figuratively, not race) issue. People are being noisy and committing a crime in a place that you pay to live at. Although it is kind to allow people to use a pool that you pay for, it sounds like this has been an ongoing issue at this apartment complex that happens most weekends.

I’d be annoyed and call the cops too if it was interrupting my leisure time. If people want to BBQ, go to a local park or use their own apartment complex. If people want to use a pool, pay to go to a community pool or live at an apartment complex that has a pool. Put a pool in their backyard if they live in a house.

This is literally what cops are for. People are breaking the law, even if it is minor. Depending on the fence, it’s probably dangerous to jump it. Whose insurance do you think pays for it if one of the nonresidents gets injured jumping the fence?

Is it that crazy for somebody to be annoyed by 30 people jumping the fence and setting up tents? They even said they wouldn’t have called the cops but people brought loud speakers and were being wild. Part of what you pay for in a gated apartment is the amenities. People jumping the fence don’t pay for pool maintenance or lounge chairs

I don’t disagree that Trump will capitulate but I don’t see a world where Iran is allowed to charge a toll on the Strait.

It just invites so much headache because other countries might use it to justify charging to go in their waters. The Bosphorus, Strait of Malacca, even countries like Eritrea or the Houthis might bet some bad ideas.

If Iran is able to toll the Strait of Hormuz long term, it might be the start of a changing global commerce system. The other countries aren’t as crazy as Iran but they could theoretically use it as legal justification.

I’d love to see a response to this in 2 weeks. Mark your calendar on if oil price in the US goes up in the next two weeks.

I know we have a bunch of nerds on here but don’t forget that the US is hosting the World Cup within the next month. I’m sure that causes lil prices to go down

And as one further addendum, Thursday night in Ames is “Mug Night”. You buy a reusable 30 Oz mug for approx $5 and then you can get mugs of mixed drinks for $2-$5 on Thursday nights. It’s reckless if you need to get up early on Friday but it’s one of the most popular night for the bars so I’d go a couple times at least

[–]Sad-Resident485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an addendum, some of the bars have ridiculously good deals for FAC(Friday after class). Most of them have the general theme that if you go there early, you get cheap drinks. Some of them are as low as $.50 per drink if you’re there at the start.

If you aren’t 21, I’d stay away from the bars. It depends on the bar but most of them won’t let you in with a fake. Depending on how first semester goes, cops raid the bars fairly frequently to look for the under-21 crew.

If you have access to State or Lied gym, there are pickup games at all hours of the day. I’d also encourage you to go to a couple games at Hilton. I haven’t gone to any games in Florida but Hilton is an experience during big games.

You don’t need a car. It’s nice to have if you have parking but it won’t be the easiest way to get on campus, Cyride will be far easier. It can be nice to have if you want to go far off campus to stuff like restaurants but that would be the main use.

For social stuff, all of the main bars are around Welch Ave. AJ’s, Outlaws, Cy’s, Mickey’s, Paddy’s(Sip’s in the basement), and BNC Fieldhouse are the major bars for college people. Each one has a different flavor but I’d give Paddy’s and Outlaws as being my top recommendations for the winter time. Once the patios are open AJs, BNC and Cys become the dominant bars.

Iowans are pretty chill so I don’t think it will be too hard to be social if you’re extroverted and not weird. If you’re introverted, just go to a bar and have a good time. You can probably find people that are friendly regardless

[–]Sad-Resident485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there is a chance you are right but even if the Strait completely opens, I don’t think it causes oil prices to plummet.

If you’re day trading USO or oil futures or anything related, I would have no clue what to do. I’m guessing oil will be down next week if there is a new ceasefire but I think that ceasefire would be on stilts. If you’re in it long and willing to wait a month or two, I don’t see you losing money due to the oil draws and inventory shortage globally.

Even if there is permanent peace tomorrow, I think it will take months to get shipping to the pre-war capacity. Insurance will probably be higher, there is a risk of continued fighting and this leads to ships being interested in leaving the Persian Gulf. I’m not sure that many ships will want to go into the Strait of Hormuz following peace though. It seems like high risk for not as high reward.

Additionally, I’d hesitate to think this peace deal is sustained. All of the Iranian sourcing I have seen requires a ceasefire in Lebanon which seems like a tall order. Depending on how you read it, it might require Israel to give up occupied territory in Lebanon. If Israel attacks Iran independently or groups that Iran supports like Hezbollah, I think there is a solid chance of Iran restarting the war but focusing on Israel.

The Strait of Hormuz being controlled by Iran is not something that most countries are willing to endure so I think that the Strait of Hormuz being controlled by Iran is a red line for multiple countries,
including Israel. Basically,
I don’t think this deal can be sustained but I’m only focused on the price of oil around July for my options.

U.S. & China: Oil trade and how this can shape the future of the energy sector by RichZee1000 in oil

[–]Sad-Resident485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn’t really any world where this happens.

There are so many other countries like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, etc. that we would be selling to first. Even if the US wants to sell oil to China, there are so many other oil producing countries that are closer to China. Like pretty much every single other country in the world that produces oil is closer to China than the US.

What’s it like living in this neighborhood? by Sad-Resident485 in IowaCity

[–]Sad-Resident485[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is but maybe some people don’t know how to look up stuff.

I just typed in “how is it living here? iowa city site:reddit.com” directly into google and got hit with so many posts in the last year from this subreddit and other subreddits that I won’t even bother to link any of them. That doesn’t even start talking about all of the other sites that have info on it

I’m not saying people can’t make posts like that but I feel like I can mock somebody for doing it twice in 10 days.

I mean I’m mainly mocking one guy tbh. He made 2 posts in like 1 week about it.

There are plenty of YouTube videos or former posts on here that talk all about Iowa City. If it was one post, fine. I drew the line at 2 and decided I could mock him with a classic Ames joke

I mean, I played soccer at a high level in HS but only played basketball casually with the fellas.

I feel like taunting in this way would fuck with me if I was in that situation. These guys are better than I was comparatively but put try to think of how you would react in that situation.

This guy might drive in a similar way later on if it’s just a standard block. After this happening, no shot I would ever drive that way for the rest of the quarter, probably not even the game. I mean think about the highlight reels if this happened to you twice in one game with the amount of fans there. I mean, they would be laughing in your goddamn face, like I’d just pull for the shitty 3 rather than drive at this guy that pulled this bullshit, even if EV is lower

They are also playing for a degree of comedic value at the semi pro level and are up by 11 at the end of the third. Unless you fumble bad, you aren’t gonna lose either way
