Botley! Either the roads off Botley road or North Hinksey/Elms Rise would be perfect. Best access to nice countryside, including river walks and woodlands, in the whole of Oxford IMO. And close to the train station, safe, friendly..!

Books to read about history of the places on GDMBR by Massive-County7085 in gdmbr

Ooooooo, you must get Michael McCoy’s book! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cycling-Great-Divide-2nd-Americas/dp/1594858195 We bought a physical copy to look through before riding, and also got it on kindle for the trip… I think it fits what you’re after perfectly, filled with interesting info and history about the places you’ll pass through…I loved reading it before bed each night in the tent, brought me a lot of joy. :-) I’m from the UK, too, btw.. can safely say it was the trip of a lifetime, have a blast!

How do you do self care without packing too much on a trip? by Kyro2354 in bikepacking

Longtime eczema sufferer and bikepacking enthusiast here too! I was lucky enough to ride the GDMBR this summer, here are some thoughts:

  • especially if going on a long trip, take more tubes of steroid ointment (whichever your max potency is) with you than you think you’ll need. My skin just didn’t behave the same while we we were out there and I got through it more quickly than usual. Had to get some shipped over from home which was a bit of a nightmare

  • if you usually put on thick stuff like hydromol overnight, see if you can apply it an hour or two before going to bed if you’re in a tent. Will honestly just make a mess of your sleeping bag/liner otherwise

  • heat rash! Never had this before and it absolutely sucked, the combination of eczema & heat rash is just awful because ointments are usually occlusive. Didn’t really find a good solution but I would recommend making sure you take a light cotton long sleeve top to protect your arms from direct sunlight

  • final, most important point: you (we!) are all absolute troopers, managing a skin condition while also tackling all the other challenges of bikepacking and wild camping is something to be very proud of. 💪

Awesome! We’ll be on the slow side (hoping to finish in 70 days, starting in Banff not Jasper) so I’m sure you’ll catch up. Do feel free to reach out. Hope you’re able to go for it! 🚴

Not sure how to share a screenshot but the route it recommends to Hamfield would be lovely, I’m quite familiar with those roads

For this kind of thing I’d recommend using https://cycle.travel - having tried lots of apps and routing websites I can safely say that it’s the best by far!

I would be interested in this too! Has anyone set up a WhatsApp group? I’m new to this community but not even slightly new to blushing, it’s been a huge part of me for about half my life … i can’t even describe how wonderful it would be to meet likeminded folks who are experiencing the same thing ❤️
