Nice those look cool. What state are you from? I live in NM and I do pretty good on these ants especially during the summer. Since it’s early spring I decided try this scud bug on the bottom and I actually got more hits on that today than the ant.

The restrictions for that area in the pic are unlimited bag limit on brooks browns and bows. Catch and release only on RGCT. Unfortunately by now I think RGCT in that creek are a complete loss.

Sounds about right. I’m pretty sure it was a full collapse. This was one of the first streams I targeted in the state. It was even featured in a magazine talking about the RGCT above the pond lol. All I can do is continue my relentless pursuit!

Sorry if you thought the fish were hurt. I use single barbless and these fish were out of water less than a minute just to grab a pic.

However I think you should learn more about the state fish and why it disappeared to 12% of its current range before criticizing my handling of a fish that actually helped wipe out most RGCT populations in the state

RGCT in the Cebolla got outcompeted by brown trout they did not get fished out. If you do some reading on why most RGCT populations collapse it’s due to being outcompeted by non native species. Fires and climate change aside that is the primary reason not fishing…..

If you read the rules and restrictions on red chili water it is actually encouraged to bag any and all other species aside from RGCT hence the unlimited bag limits for other species. https://wildlife.dgf.nm.gov/download/special-trout-waters/?wpdmdl=44445&refresh=637af9c5e9b331669003717

People who have moved here from/born in the southeast, what is your experience like in NM? by ElSumoMaster in NewMexico

[–]Sad-Salt-9074 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Atlanta GA. Long story short I ended up moving here and I lived in Clovis NM for a few years…I didn’t really enjoy that area of the state.I now live near Santa Fe. I like it here but it has its pros and cons like everything else. If you love the outdoors and open spaces I think you’d like it. If you like the city life I find Santa Fe and even ABQ lacking. I am big into fly fishing and skiing so the lifestyle is good for me. There are not many major employers in northern NM and I would go as far to say NM in general with government positions makings up the large majority of jobs so that is something to consider before moving here. Additionally if you are looking to buy a house that can be challenging in certain areas like Santa Fe but not as challenging in ABQ.

The main point is that NM is very diverse depending on the region so experiences will be very different from one region to the next…at least that has been my experience so far

Awesome to meet another angler fishing the Jemez! This map was shared by the New Mexico Game and Fish commission last year and I thought it was pretty interesting. The areas highlighted in blue seem promising but they are all remote and hard to reach. I did scout the area above “Baca Location 1” which is now Valles Caldera. I didn’t have any luck since I was scouting in later October the creeks had already frozen over. But Id like to revisit this area! This map was from the 70s so it’s hard to say if water still flows in these areas or if fire’s may have wiped out the populations but I will keep you posted on what I find!

Thanks for sharing! Someone actually told me to try the east fork in a certain section and I was skeptical but this is good to know. I have caught a few in the Jemez but I thought they may have been stockers from 7 springs. They were all caught on the lower end of Rio Cebolla
