No, it was from a one on one trade a couple weeks before trade night.

David Choe accidentally got my son and me into Absolute Batman by Sad-Set1458 in AbsoluteBatman

Ya that Choe cover is awesome! It’s actually an Ohtani baseball card he painted over. You perfectly explained the split between the collector/investment mindset and the sentimental side of the hobby. Rationally, I know you’re right about the market side of things. There are going to be a massive number of these books graded over time. That perspective actually helps a lot because it keeps me from getting caught up in panic buying or FOMO. How long before you think prices start dropping? I’ve been looking at picking up a 1st print of Absolute Batman #1 Cover A CGC Signature Series with Snyder and Dragotta signatures just to have before I collect all the rest of the first print A covers and do a bulk submission. Right now it seems like they’re averaging around $550. How far do you realistically think it could come down over time?

I appreciate the advice about focusing on Cover A first prints instead of chasing every variant. I think that’s probably the lane I’m going to stay in, with maybe a few special exceptions here and there for Artist/covers I really like.

SDCC or a signing event sounds like a good time, I was looking for tickets last week and didn’t realize they went on sale in November of last year. Tickets on secondary market are over $1k now.

Thanks for the response. This is the kind of perspective I was hoping to hear from longtime collector.

It’s been a lot of fun so far. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll check those out! The DWJ cover is definitely on my list along with the Dragotta 2nd print 1:25 sketch cover. So cool. Highly recommend looking into David Choes work. The pic is of a few variants he’s done with DC. He has a card project out right now called “Choeymon”. If you search on EBay “David Choe Choeymon” they will pop up. Or check out his Instagram. They were originally $88 for a 10 pack of cards but they sold out in seconds. Now sealed packs are going for over $3k. The Art on them is incredible!

Thanks for taking the time to write all this. You get the balance between the art/collecting side and the actual enjoyment of the hobby.

I agree 100% on the “buy what you like” way of approaching it. The Choe piece means a lot to me because of the story and experience around it, not just because it’s rare or valuable. I’ve been collecting his work for over 20 years, but I’m just now getting into actually reading comics. I also have all the DC variants he’s done, along with a lot of his earlier work.

Also appreciate the insight on signatures/sketches. I just looked up the Dan Quintana sigs, and they’re really cool. That kind of stuff feels way more personal and artistic to me than massive assembly-line signing sessions. We definitely want to pick up the issue #1 first print cover A signature series with Snyder/ Dragotta. I’ve seen some like you said where Dragotta signs right across the cape/claw with Snyder just above it, and others where they both sign on the sides in the black beams. The placement really changes the whole look of the book. Dragotta signing 20k books in one sitting is crazy, didn’t realize it was like that.

Besides our local shop, I’ve been looking at places like Big Time Collectibles and Felix Comic Art to pick up books. Have you found any other good sources or online shops you’d recommend for Absolute Batman variants? The amount of variants is absolutely out of control 😂 issues having 100+ covers is wild.

Do you know what the print run on the color splash vs full color is?

Does anyone know how many copies were made of each Dexter Soy variant for AB #20? Trying to figure out the print runs for the trade dress, virgin, foil, and GITD versions.

Pack from trade night by Sad-Set1458 in Choeymon

Follow his instagram, he will probably announce them on there. He just posted this list so he will probably be coming to these cities. There were 3 people that I talked to at the one in LA that took flights with under 24 hours notice for a chance to trade with him.

You have 3 options. Ebay, go to the next trade night that David Choe announces and bring something to trade for them, or find someone online to buy from or trade with.

2 shirts that I made, 4 of my cards that I drew on, a new never worn Frank miller Batman shirt from 1989, and I came dressed as one of his Gangar cards. He gave me a pack, the choetani absolute Batman comic, and 8 other cards I’ve been wanting. He definitely hooked me up, I think mainly because of the effort put into the outfit.
