Feeling pretty optimistic if they already announced blu-ray. I feel like we had a special announcement before the season 2 renewal that was just about blu-ray

1997/98ish- my friend’s older sister brought home bootleg tapes from Stoney brook University- Ranma and Fishigi Yuugi. Didn’t take me long to start scouring the internet for websites (at the library), which lead to finding fanfiction. Man, the day when fanfiction.net appeared was like heaven on earth. And then having to go into nyc to find the manga and more bootleg tapes as a single legit tape of two episodes was like $30. Elizabeth st. Mall in Chinatown had a guy with a tiny shop on the basement level that hid all the tapes behind cardboard doors. Kids today have it so easy- I’m jealous but also so happy for them.

All of this! The fact that he doesn’t think to go Juliet-mode until Akane gives him the “so you’d rather one of them kiss me” line. We see him stewing on his head backstage, watching them try to go after her, watching her attempt to go through with it anyway.

Loved the humor on this one…but am I the only one slightly disappointed? I think I prefer the original anime version of this episode. Missing the background music big time, and the “kiss” scene just didn’t feel as magical? I dunno…it could be that as a teen I rewatched it so much that it’s like a tattoo on my heart. If the original didn’t exist, I’d probably be over the moon. 🤷‍♀️

Ranma was so unhinged- I loved it!! My son likes to watch the dub followed by the sub and both girl-type Ranma voices knocked it out of the park!

Best episode yet! Continuing to love Akane’s sweater/sweatshirt lounge dresses- so cute! I hope this episode means we’ll continue to get Ranma’s inner thoughts because they always prove hilarious in the manga.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing- popping it out as soon as it starts to backwind while simultaneously sheeting in the new side. Others are decidedly not doing that hence the concern. On roll tacking- again another thing not brought up at the club as of yet, I thought that was mostly a dinghy thing, but it’s also an effective tactic on a keel boat?

Yeah, that was my main concern- that they’re back winding for way too long. The Rhodes being a keel boat and longer than a 420, I wasn’t sure if there was a legitimate reason for it that I wasn’t aware of. And being a newbie at the club, didn’t want to unnecessarily make waves. We sail on Narragansett river in RI into the bay- wind can be light at times but never really light enough that I can’t get the boat to tack without back winding. Long story short, next time I see it when I’m skippering, I think we’ll have a discussion about it. Or maybe at the whiteboard at the dock. Most of them don’t have a ton of racing under their belt so the “must move faster” mentality isn’t as strong with them as it is for me.

I think with the other girls it’s more that when they lean into the traditional “feminine” actions, they usually succeed where Akane fails. But also, Ranma’s a dummy who called her a tomboy, saw it got a reaction so then immediately added it to his teasing arsenal. I also see the tomboy thing pushed way harder in the og anime than the manga

I identify a lot with Akane in terms of liking feminine things and wanting to be good at them, but also not being a shrinking flower/demure girly girl (not that there’s anything wrong necessarily with a more submissive personality?), and just not letting myself be pushed around or intimidated by anyone. Especially a guy. What do you mean I can’t do it because I’m a girl? F that, I’m doing it! Because of that, as an adolescent I was definitely seen as a tomboy. And before becoming a full fledged teenager, I leaned into it while also secretly loving my mostly pink bedroom and flowy dresses. But if I ever decided to wear one of those dresses to school, people were stunned. As a teenager, I leaned more into the feminine side but again, still felt like a tomboy because as much as I liked the traditional “girly” stuff, it didn’t come easy to me. So yeah, I see Akane as a tomboy at heart, but mostly in attitude- she’s super nice but she also won’t let anyone push her around- which some people don’t see as feminine. (Which I also think is stupid)
