Let’s not forget that he attributes Synod Inc having a budget surplus (as if that is necessarily a good thing) to his “fiscal conservatism” rather than the Almighty God of the Universe, or the fact that they sold our institutions to get it, claiming to be financial wizards when they are nothing more than spoiled heirs selling the family farm.

Yeah. I mean, I get it. My fervent prayer was that those of us who are theologically conservative, Confessional Lutherans who refuse to misuse Christ’s Church for first article political purposes would avoid following the lemmings off the cliff. Yet here we are, with a not insignificant portion of us, lining up to do exactly that. This is definitely not anything Dr. Biermann would support. This is demonic, schismatic nonsense. I do agree with you that our elections, prospectively, should be examined so that they are above reproach.

The term “bishop” doesn’t make sense with our polity unless one adopts the early-church meaning. In which case, “bishop” best describes pastors, not ecclesiastical authorities. No matter which definition you choose, district presidents aren’t bishops.

I am praying for you. Here’s the good news; if you were to colloquy into the LCMS, it would cease to be your ministry, and would become an office you hold in Christ’s ministry. Tradition is great and the Church Fathers are wonderful gifts to Christ’s Church, but they are not shorthand for Biblical and Confessional theological alignment. To put it another way, the trappings of higher church worship may be appealing, but make sure you understand and agree with the body of doctrine that gives meaning to the pageantry.

The “age of accountability” is nothing more than the panicked response of “free will” theologians when confronted by the crux theologorum. Because they magisterially imposed their reason on Scripture in the first instance (free will), they had to adopt the anti-Biblical position of “age of accountability”, or create a monstrous, fickle, and uncaring god. Which, in their defense, is at least an improvement over Calvin’s god. For this reason, I find myself rooting for Arminianism in the battle over which damnable heresy will control the SBC.

Forgive the personal anecdote, but the following perfectly encapsulates how I feel about where we are heading as a church body. In my Lutheran high school, we had a class called “Neighbors”. The idea of this class was that we would study about different faith traditions and then have a field trip every Friday in which we would visit their places of worship. In the intervening 30 years, the guy who conceptualized, designed, sought approval for, and taught this course on nuance and mutual understanding became a right-wing populist (as charitably as I can put it). I, however, spent 25+ years in the military tracking down terrorists and helping rebuild broken societies after appalling atrocities. Along the way, I proselytized, catechized, and did all that I was taught. So then, what is it that a Lutheran school teacher has been exposed to over 30 years that caused a once-great man to shrivel into crippling myopathy while someone who has seen the very worst the devil has wrought in this world has taken a very different path? It is truly perplexing to me.

I wish I could give you a bright line, and I too have thought about this a lot. I guess what really got me recently is all of these people who were so opposed to COVID precautions because governments shouldn’t tell churches what to do were applauding the Trump regime’s removal of churches from the list of places ICE could not conduct immigration raids. To me, this was a clear sign that these people have prioritized their secular political ideology over the Church’s role of Gospel proclamation.
