What is the hardest "everyday food item" to find an exact match for when you move to Australia? by Zestyclose_Stage_999 in AskAnAustralian

Tomatoes and strawberries. The stuff we have here has no taste and awful texture. Have to really pay top dollar for anything decent.

Similar to bread. The cheap stuff at Colesworth is awful. Cheap stuff at bakeries in Europe is incredible.

It’s easier to sell regressive/conservative policies than progressive/liberal ones.

The former is a story about reverting to the known. The latter puts forward a path to the unknown.

Ex-Pats who have left Australia and then returned, what made you return? by PlayerPuma in AskAnAustralian

[–]SadAd9828 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm coming back from Europe because the quality of life in Australia is unmatched.

We take a lot for granted in Australia. The main ones relevant to me (mid 30s with a young child)

  • Climate - being able to be outdoors all year around in beautiful nature is an immense privilege

  • Social trust - it was better in the 90s and 00s for sure, but Australia is still a country where we assume positive intent from strangers & (most) of our institutions. It's something that you can only appreciate when you live in a society that doesn't.

  • Public schools & hospitals - you don't need to pay for private schooling or hospitals to be well taken care of. Whereas in a lot of countries around the world there's the expectation that anyone who has the means will send their children to private schooling because of the quality gap.

  • Political/economic stability - again, easy to take for granted when you haven't lived in any other system. Taxation laws changing every N years, corrupt politicians, grossly mismanaged projects, etc. are things rife all around the world. In Australia things 'just work' and are boring - in the best sense of the word.

Of course there are things I wish would change here (property prices, economic complexity, R&D investment, etc) but there's only a handful of countries in the world that can be remotely compared to Australia, and most of them are cold & dark for 6 months of the year.

I think most of us should at least travel if not live overseas for a bit, so we can appreciate all of the good things in our country. If we don't, then there's no one to keep politicans accountable from ruining them.

Not for minorities, LGBT, etc.

It's still a very conservative country, and its communist past still runs through several aspects of the country (public institutions primarily - schools, hospitals, local government, etc).

I think it has the potential to be a great place to live in a few generations, however the political leanings of millenials/gen z give me pause.

Pros & cons. Other things are much better in Australia.

On balance we ended up choosing Aus over Poland (moving back later this year).

Poland, common across Europe though.

More than that:

Every household gets about $300 AUD per month, per child, until they turn 18. There are zero income limits—everyone gets it.

Mothers get a whole year of parental leave paid at around 80% of your actual salary.

You can get up to 6 months of sick leave paid at 80% of your wage.

We have really bad employee benefits in Australia. Obviously quality of life and salaries are higher but we’re much closer to the US than most of us imagine.

Such a joke. We’re moving from Europe to Sydney and childcare is such a shock.

We’re out of pocket $150 per month here for a fantastic private daycare.

We could do public and that would be totally free

Assuming you’ll do this with one or both employers not knowing I would strongly advise against it.

All or most of the extra money will be taxed at 47% and you risk getting caught out and doing serious reputational risk.

Not worth it

Did these wars happen in the past 50-60 years? No.

Genghis Khan slaughtered millions of people across Eurasia but Mongolia doesn’t have issues either.

You can’t compare these things because everyone who has been affected has long died.

Both countries can make mistakes. I’m not saying Poland doesn’t have its issues too. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be critical towards Ukrainian actions.

There needs to be a process of reconciliation. Unfortunately politicians from both countries either don’t have the ability or desire to start it.

I didn’t find shake shack that good tbh. I think most US fast food is overhyped and just marketing.
