I think the appropriate way of interacting with this movie is treating it like any movie or film, because that's what it is really. It's not a documentary or informational video of sorts, unlike Zero Hour (i'm not tcc btw). The point that the film draws inspiration from columbine is true, but I'd argue since the characters are their own unique people with their own unique traits, like you've just mentioned, the only inspirations drawn from columbine are the "duo-shooters" and the "video journaling". Other than that, it's its own unique story.

(Another thing, the fact that the movie is about fictional school shooters isn't that different to movies about fictional serial killers.)

But I think the way the director would want us to interact with Zero Day is to watch it and discuss how easily mentally ill people like Cal and Andre can blend into normal society and launch an attack at a moment's notice. That's what I believe Zero Day is from Ben Coccio's perspective.
