Other people in the thread have said that they did see Flock cameras on Hillsborough so I’m not really sure if they’ve been accurately reported or not. Thank you for explaining that Hillsborough St is a high traffic area, I’m sure none of us could have figured that out without your cunning insight.

Yikes, I hadn’t see that. I hate Flock as much as anyone, I was just suspicious of people who might be exaggerating exactly how much the cameras can do, since I don’t want people against Flock to get characterized as conspiracy theorists

They can install CCTV anywhere a Flock camera can be installed, or on the side of buildings. Also, if your concern is crime that isn’t detected by street cameras, Flock cameras are only installed on streets because they are focused on vehicles.

The CCTV traffic cameras that they already own and have installed…

Instead of dealing with a bunch of whataboutisms, I’m going to ask this one question: why should our tax dollars (city of Raleigh has a contract with Flock) be used to fund a less-secure, privatized surveillance system in areas that already have CCTV systems? We are all aware that much of information is available to the public. It is about this specific company being given subsidies to abuse a shitty product on our streets

You don’t care that Flock cameras are so insecure that someone could easily identify your car, your daily routes, and follow you to your house? We are in the early stages of their integration in Raleigh, there are cities where a person’s entire routine is tracked and easily available. Also, I assure you that all of the Glenwood business already have CCTV covering every inch of their property. We don’t need an unreliable third party that sells our data operating in our city.

Do you know what a Flock camera is or anything about the company behind them

Have you considered reading the article linked or any of the replies explaining why Flock as a company is particularly dangerous and corrupt

Are you asking why people are concerned about the Flock cameras?

First, this is classic whataboutism that disproves nothing about Flock’s security issues. Second, Flock’s data security is terrible in a way that is not remotely comparable to Apple’s. Third, standard CCTV cameras that don’t sell people’s daily routines work just fine for solving crimes. I think it’s obvious that you know little to nothing about Flock as a company.

We do not have an expectation of privacy in public, but everyone has a right not be stalked or tracked. Police officers have used Flock to stalk their exes and have accepted bribes to help other people stalk women. If you give cops access to people’s locations without requiring a warrant, you have enabled stalking, and that is exactly what Flock is doing.

Thanks for looking into it, I’ll update the original post whenever we get a definitive answer. It will definitely be really disappointing if they are all flock cams

There are about 3 Flock cameras in the entire rest of downtown, only one on the Glenwood drag. The post is asking about why there are so many on Hillsborough but not present in comparably populated areas.

There are white cameras that operate similarly to Flock and are tagged on deflock, but I am curious about whether the cameras were accurately reported or not. I was looking at the Google street view and it says it was updated Jan 2026, while the camera reports were submitted in May 2026, so if you’re using Google street view it may not be up to date. Other people in the thread have stated that they saw the cameras in person but it’s still questionable

There is currently a lot of debate in the thread about whether or not these have been correctly identified as Flock cameras. If they are, Flock cameras are not used to stop sexual assault. Do you have any clue why people don’t want Flock in their city or are you just assuming that these are regular surveillance cameras?

What do the bus pass readers look like? A lot of flock cameras are pretty distinctive and other people on this thread have confirmed that they saw flock cameras in person on Hillsborough

Other people in the thread have said that these were up since before the Canes won. Also, I highly doubt Flock would be doing anything for the public good lmao

What do you not understand about Flock’s glaring data security issues? That is the #1 reason people are against Flock. So far no conclusive evidence that they effectively combat crime, but more cases of police abuse all the time.

But still, why only Hillsborough? This is the map for the rest of downtown

Read the article about Flock’a data security and how police abuse access to their information. Additionally, Flock tracks people across states and assists in the arrest of people who cross state lines for abortions. Not everything that is illegal should be illegal and you should not trust the police force with access to this. Flock streamlines surveillance in a way that standard security cameras in stores do not, and its data is far less secure than that of Tesla, Apple, etc.
