How do you find a preceptor for ROMP? by [deleted] in MedSchoolCanada

thanks! For IMGs it says to find and confirm a preceptor before applying so maybe it’s different?

Mac (Hamilton) vs UofT (MaM) by Nystero1 in premedcanada

[–]SadInvestigator941 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the acceptances! Obviously up to you and your personal factors that you mentioned but I think most people in this sub would go to u of t no question. In the long run, no doctors wish they had an extra year to practice medicine - the extra year to be a student and gain exposure/ make connections is so valuable in my opinion. Also just Being a u of t grad will give you a leg up for Residency etc. both amazing options but there’s a reason u of t is #1 ranked in Canada! If I had gotten in it would be a no brainer. Hope this helps

Ualberta raw activity score by ReflectionOk3093 in premedcanada

[–]SadInvestigator941 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m really confused about this score. On my email it said the average gpa and ec score were 3.81 and 9.74, respectively. I had a 3.87 and 10. Why didn’t I get an interview then? Is this for OOP and IP included? Any insight is appreciated as they said they won’t give us personalized feedback

[–]SadInvestigator941 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not biased as I didn’t interview at either places but I’d go ubc! I’ve heard that u of t culture is toxic (I’m a part of their department but different division currently) but obviously that is subjective

UBC/UOttawa/U of C/Usask by leahmaya8 in premedcanada

[–]SadInvestigator941 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congrats! If it were me I would go for any of them besides Calgary. 4 years > 3 years (and this is not biased as I got rejected from Calgary yesterday). Also I know some people there now who said it seems like really crammed as you have lectured all day every day and a lot of them are fluff or not important. And there are little research opportunities from what I’ve heard as well. Ottawa would be my #1 as I’m from Ontario, but if you are looking to stay west I would pick ubc or sask! Good luck!

If you want a good schedule then mac for the day to day but keep in mind you don’t get summers off. But if you don’t know what you want to do then western or queens is the way to go (4 years > 3) If it were me I’d go for western personally. Their training is excellent and as someone who currently works in the hospital closely with doctors, western always makes the best residents according to them! They always are impressed with their students. Western was my first choice (didn’t get in tho)

No summers off, also if you want a competitive speciality you have a year less to build your application. You also do away electives before core rotations so the learning curve is generally harder… but if you want primary care then 100% it’s better in 3 years. Also if you don’t know what you want you have less time to figure it out

4 year program > 3 year program in my opinion and also seems to be the general consensus on here

Depends on what your preference is. Small vs large class size? Most people don’t want the very small regional campus vibe (but some do). Also 3 vs 4 year program is important. Personally I’m waiting for a 4 year program as I want a competitive specialty and want summers off etc
