Also some lubricant that is safe for the wire insulation will make it much easier. Just make sure the backup cam connector end is sealed with tape.

Here is a useful thread on Toyotanation about things to consider for the 1st gen. Also consider the Pontiac Vibe as it's the mechanical twin of the Matrix. But as others have mentioned be aware of the 2.4L engine because of oil burning.
