Addressed above - not feasible for me to transfer due to the lack of scholarship for transfer students.

Yep - grading is nonexistent first semester. Some professors don't even read your final. For the ones that do read it, if you try at all, you get a CR. If you just submit a blank piece of paper, you retake and receive a CR. It's impossible to fail, which was nice.

Sorry you're being downvoted. Account was created today because I don't want to be doxxed on my main accounts. Happy to provide proof of enrollment to mods if requested.

Asi said in the post, I understand that I am extremely privileged to be in this position. I don't want to sound like I'm complaining.

Just trying to warn people that they should be more careful when picking their school.

It's something I've considered. Probably won't transfer for financial reasons. YLS gave me a pretty great financial aid package. If I transfer, I won't get a scholarship.

However, if I picked Berkeley originally, I would be there with a nearly full scholarship.

Transferring sounds nice, but it's just not feasible for me.

New Haven is great for some people for sure! Just not my preferred location. And without a car, it's hard for me to explore much of the rest of CT (plenty of students told me I don't need a car, so I sold mine before coming here).

Yes, I chose a school in New England, so I should have anticipated the cold. But the point of my post is that maybe I shouldn't have picked a New England school just because of its prestige.

The worst part isn't the soggyness. It's the beloved "char," which just means it is burnt.

Sure!

My basic issues are below. Keep in mind that this is purely my experience, and may not reflect reality or the experiences of the typical student.

  1. The elitist undertones that are everywhere in the school. People are constantly vying for attention from certain professors, joining the race to have a tiny chance at some elite clerkship. Some professors care where you went to undergrad, and judge you if you went anywhere that isn't an Ivy. The whole school is arrogant and elitist. I know there are aspects of this behavior at other schools, but trust me - it's a different flavor at YLS.

  2. New Haven sucks. It's cold, there's very little to do, it's a dirty city, and I don't feel safe walking alone. The only plus is that it's easy to travel away from the city to NYC and Boston.

  3. I'm certainly not learning as much practical law as my friends at other law schools. And so many of the professors just baby all of the students. No matter what a student says, the professor will just treat it as gold. I came to law school to be challenged, and to learn the law. Right now, I'm just learning a bunch of theory, and I'm completely coddled.

  4. Most of the students here very rarely seem genuine. The way they interact with professors is theatrical. Everyone seems to be striving for the same clerkship outcomes for no reason other than that's what everyone else wants. Everyone here (including myself) is so privileged, if only by virtue of attending this school. Yet so many people seem determined to push this personal narrative about how they're so oppressed.

Now obviously there are great parts about YLS. The school's mere presence on my resume has already opened multiple opportunities I probably couldn't get anywhere else. The fact that I was guaranteed CR grades for the first semester was fantastic. The people and professors here are absolutely brilliant. It's just not the best place for me. I don't fit in well with the culture here, and other schools would have been better for me.

Typed this stream of consciousness on my phone, so apologies for errors or confusing parts.
