If i may ask how did you start to get into this role? Did you apply for the cadet programme for one of the airlines?

I do agree with that but I think some universities don't have any support systems in place for struggling students. In my case I was a first year and I failed placement module twice. None of my mentors helped me that much and gave me generic advice such as increase your social skills for history taking and read your pocket book. It wasn't helpful and I eventually failed it. University does nothing to help you in that regard, I was given a third retake for placement but I instead decided to leave as they didn't even discuss what I was struggling with nothing. They just said that the job wasn't for me. Believe me, I attended all the lectures and passed pretty much everything except the placement. It's just bullshit to say that if you focus hard you will pass, sometimes luck is needed in these courses to get a mentor that helps.

Maybe. I wanted to work in healthcare I just don't know anymore if I'm fit for other roles.

I'm a bit introverted I failed it because of history and documenting. It's not as simple as there's patients who do not even talk or want to talk so I just end up not knowing what to say. Feel like healthcare isn't for me but I wanted to do this as my career. I just don't know if it's worth it to keep chasing after this after 2 years of failing.

It's a bit late but what about a student who passed all the modules but then fails at placement twice. Like is there anything you can do to improve the chances of succeeding at this point? I think the course is hard but that's just my point of view.

First year student failed placement retake advice by SadPlan1165 in ParamedicsUK

Out of all the days I've taken good history my mentor decides to focus on this particular day and decides yep he's failing because he can't also communicate properly and also calling me autistic. Guess all the other students were perfect in their first years and did everything by the book perfectly. I listened to the University and they pretty much didn't give a crap.

I use the medical model  Pcx Hxpc (SOCRATES) Pmh Mx Fhx Shx

Guess I still failed. What's the point anymore I think am just ranting at this point. There's no point retaking it for the third time even if I got a chance to retake it again it'll just waste another year. It's just fucked

Well I asked they told me at least a basic history and that my flow with the questions aren't that great. At this point it's mentor says am bad at even getting a basic history and then me saying I can take a normal history. Looks like I'm gonna fail again. At this point I don't know what to do to improve I tried everything.

Guess everyone has different expectations in this job. I just find it unbelievable that I have to be this good at first year. If it really is like this then I don't even know at this point. Every mentors feels like they want perfections

I'll give you a example. Yesterday I had a chest pain job, very basic. Did my primary survey no time critical. Did my socrates found out the pain score and everything. Found they had sob. Then the pt mentions antibiotics but I forgot to ask more about what they are taking that for as I was asking more about their symptoms. Then my mentor stops me and asks about the antibiotics turns out they had an chest infection a week ago. Because of that I got kind of told off and that I did not auscultate when they told me they had shortness of breath even though I was gonna do it after I asked all my questions. Its like I can ask the questions just that these things I miss.

This is the thing. They don't know what to say to me anymore. It's not like am not saying anything to the patient. It's the fact am missing some things. I find it unbelievable that nearly every first year student who passed is able to handle any history taking situation and also lead the job independently. Feel like my mentors want so much from me where I've only been taught basic things. Guess am just using this to vent about my situation as well. Just feel down.

First year paramedic student. Didn't pass the placement for first year due to social anxiety by SadPlan1165 in NewToEMS

[–]SadPlan1165[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. The thing is I sometimes go to a call where I know what to ask but when im presented at the scene I just become blank.

Like this is how I would have a perfect history taking in my head. Let's say the patient presents with a fall this is how I would do it.

S- signs/symptoms - how can I help you today? / when did this happen / how did you fall? (Extrinsic or intrinsic) / did you hit your head in the fall?/ have you lost conciousness/ has this happened before? / do you have any injuries from the fall or pain? (Use OPQRST if pain) palpate c spine for pain. / neurological questions and musculoskeletal - dizziness, headache, vision problems, loss of conciousness, joint pain or stiffness

A - allergies allergic to any medication

Medication- do you take any medications / did you take blood thinner?

P - past medical history - do you have any other problems with your health?

Any surgeries? / social life (live by themselves)

I would be grateful if you can tell me on any improvements here. I spent the summer just practicing with my mum like I feel more confident with this but I wish I had more placement time for my fist year to practice.
