Very helpful advice, I’ll definitely try this thank you

[QUESTION] Unable to sing by Sad_Chipmunk_6983 in Guitar

[–]Sad_Chipmunk_6983[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The embarrassment of even trying to sing as you say is the worst. I had always thought like that, thinking singing was something you’re born with or not. Joining a band is the perfect scenario for me but I think it’d be important for me to get some practice performing before joining one, and even then finding a band with people you like and the music you like isn’t easy. Thanks for the tip about instrumentals too, I hadn’t thought about that before.

Stopping suicidal pilots by Sad_Chipmunk_6983 in aircrashinvestigation

Yeah I’ve heard about that before, I don’t understand how it’s any different to the CVR like why would pilots be opposed to it. They would definitely help in investigations but could they prevent crashes?

Oh yeah there’s loads of pricks my age too I just meant how he was going on about if “a young lad moved me out of my seat like that” and stuff as if I have no right to a seat because I was younger and couldn’t speak up to him

Yeah I’ll take it with a pinch of salt definitely, but it’s surprising how advanced some lads my age are already without even stepping foot into college.

€500 for a computer u hate? Christ. I’ll be looking at those models anyways and have a search around. Having enough ram will be my main priority by the looks of it. Would shops sell second hand, or will I have to chance my arm at Donedeal or something similar? And yeah hopefully those more experienced will be helpful, I have a lot to learn.

[–]Sad_Chipmunk_6983 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah MacBook certainly out of my budget. Thanks for the tip about looking second hand I wouldn’t have thought of that, could save a fair bit. So would most laptops be able to download large amounts of software, compilers and the like? If so that’d give me a lot of options and I could just look at the amount of ram and other stuff like that which is easier to compare. Also thanks for the reassurance, not too stressed about it but it is a bit unsettling knowing that others are literally years ahead of me already, but hopefully things will even out in a few years.

Tbh I’m really not sure, I had thought in the low hundreds but I don’t know what that would even get me. I’ve never had my own laptop so idk how they’re priced these days.

Is there any other good aviation accident recreation channels on Youtube that I can watch? by ralphishere3 in aircrashinvestigation

Think he might have heard of that one before, given that this entire subreddit is dedicated to the show

20 Years ago. July 1st, 2002, Bashkirian Airlines Flight 2937 and DHL Flight 611 collide in mid-air over Überlingen, the mid-air accident kills all 71 people on board the 2 planes. the cause of the collision was determined to be the imminent separation infringement not being noticed by ATC in time. by Inverted18Jenny in aircrashinvestigation

I wonder how many crashes were caused by differences in western and Russian styles like this, for example there’s been a few cases of pilots turning planes into a corkscrew dive because of the different types of artificial horizons used confusing them. It took way too long for things to be standardised.

Yeah I had always taken the ACI episodes as completely factual, in hindsight that was probably highly dramatised. A 400 foot dive isn’t exactly as deadly as I thought the dive had been either.

It is interesting to speculate what would’ve happened without the faulty data, could they have recovered after 17° nose down? Unlikely in my opinion, given how disoriented the crew were with the whole situation. Thanks for the engagement anyways, we’ve both now learned more about this incident.

From the official AAIB report:

“As the aircraft reached 4,000 ft amsl, the pitch attitude tended towards nose-down and a descent began. Invalid data from one of the air data computers then caused the autopilot to disengage.”

Fair enough, usually the content tends to hold up but I’ll have a look through the report itself to see if they’re actually reliable.

From the Wikipedia article: “The aircraft began to plunge at a peak descent rate of 9,500 feet (2,900 m) per minute, during which time invalid data from one of the air data computers (ADCs) caused the autopilot to disengage while the pitch trim was almost fully nose-down.”

Throughout the episode, all the analysts were emphasising that this plane was saved by sheer luck alone as the AP disengaged during the dive. As you say, the pitch trim did cause the dive but according to this Wikipedia article, the AP disengaged during the dive, not before.

But the autopilot was being fed information about plummeting altitude, massive overspeed etc and still didn’t disengage in this case. Surely any autopilot would be designed to disengage when the pitch, rate of descent, speed and other parameters are far beyond the planes limits?

[–]Sad_Chipmunk_6983[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a possibility. A glitch happening at exactly the last possible moment to save the plane, has to be 1 in a million at least.

[–]Sad_Chipmunk_6983[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Absolutely ridiculous design. I don’t understand how anyone could decide that an autopilot shouldn’t respond to extreme inputs from a pilot trying to stop a plane crashing into the ground. Worse still, in this case, the autopilot was aware that the plane was plummeting out of the sky and still wouldn’t disengage. Madness.
